Another post gave me the idea- Why not build a completely airtight fort save for a trade depot, even if you want that? Even then that can be an island floating among the water. You could C long bridges to the edge of the map after making a bowl-like structure to hold the water of your fort in (Although, gobbies can get in that way, too.) This way it's even get-in-able even in adventurer mode!

I already have a fort like that. Except the lake freezes in the winter, so I'm in the process of building walls around it right now.
