Unconscious Cougar - My Hunter seems to be quite cruel.
« on: March 01, 2008, 12:53:00 am »

So my hunter on this new map I'm playing spent a fair amount of time stalking a cougar, axe in hand.. he pursued him relentlessly.

He finally reached the poor cat and sliced him up good, leaving him with a pierced lung and one of his limbs missing, laying unconscious on the top of a plateau.  Then he walked off, leaving the cat there to suffer.

It's been laying there, occasionally moving a foot or two, but he seems to be completely oblivious to it at this point.  Either he decided to get a drink just before laying the killing blow, or he wanted to show the cougar who the real carnivore was.  The cougar still lays there unconscious, but he's more than happy to continue to slaughter goats and groundhogs.

An interesting way to start off a fort.  Maybe I should give him a lava bath now before he slaughters the whole fort.

More Blood For The Blood God!

Seriously, the more cruel and unusual, the better, when it comes to DF...
Well, the more anything really, but yea :P

Cruel would be if he sat there and gouged out the cougar's eyes, then proceeded to break every bone in its body one by one.

Hi!

I wonder. This might be related to something I noted in adventure mode:

Sometimes, when foes fall unconscious, I will no longer automatically attack them if I move onto their tile. Instead, I have to deliberately 'A'ttack them to make them correct targets again. Maybe something like that happens with the cougar.

However, I also noticed that when they regain consciousness, they usually become legal targets again.

In the case of the hunter, I could imagine that the unconscious cougar is no legal target, so the hunter chooses some other job. Then the cougar recovers and becomes a legal target, but the hunter is busy elsewhere. And when the hunter is free again, the cougar has collapsed again...

That theory could at least explain it, I think.

Nah, just a peg leg and an eyepatch.  Put him on a post outside your fortress, the goblins will see him and think "Wow, that's one mean cat, let's find a different fortress to die in front of.

How would I catch it?  I set my butcher's shop to "capture live land animal", but that didn't seem to do it.

Would I just set a bunch of cage traps around him until he groggily stumbles into one?  And can I then tame him?

Yes. Also use channels to limit it's options.
