Traping a Titan?
« on: April 15, 2007, 01:07:00 pm »

I've been playing this game for a long time, but theres lots of things i have not done or seen before.  for example, I have never had a megabeast move on to my map.  So it started something like this:

Lah-de-da, watching the dwarfs build some burial chambers... hey, why were two just struck down?  what the hell does he mean, "cancel building, interupted by Titan?"  why are all those.. oh. oh, no.

it wasnt just on the map, it was INSIDE THE FORT.  did it leap out of the river? climb from the chasm?  what the hell?  no. nothing like that.  some twit pesant was picking something up on the farthest (around a long bend in the river, a good 3 minute walk in real-time) and lead the Titan back into my fort.  INTO THE FORT.

This isnt as bad as it sounds, despite the fact that other dwarfs were running to aid, and others were running away.  some were being batted around like rag dolls and crippled.  Not as bad as it sounds.  I have a long entrance hall that leads up to the cave river, doors on either side of the river, and then the fort proper begins.

It was still on the far side of the cave river, so i just locked both sets of double doors, and prayed none of those stunty little bastards led it over there to smash them down.

And to their credit, they did not.  Only about four of them were smushed, and the Titan wandered back out side, and back to his distant corner of the map.  I ordered all my dwarfs to stay inside, and we'll be just fine this way for a good while.

now, when he wandered back outside - and by the reflexive property of equality, also when he first wandered INSIDE - he was prancing over a few weapons traps that seemed not to hurt him at all.  also, he was prancing over a few dozzen CAGE traps which seemed not to trap him at all.

now, i dont see "trap immune" on the titans profile.  I know i cant tame them, but i think i should at least be able to trap them.  I build all those cage traps so I would have the chance of luring a megabeast in, if one ever came.  and not only did one come, but it waked passed my traps without me having to even try! and it wasnt trapped!

so what property makes a creature untrapable?

I wanted to use him to fight the demons!  or at least to be the main display in my royal dining room!

You realize that if you kill him you get a masterpiece bronze statue? How's that for decoration? It should be trapped if you let it run over enough traps sooner or later they will get it. The reason why it didn't seem to be hurt by the weapon traps is because it's just too tough to suffer much damage from those. But don't try to trap it, the demons would just kill it and it would be a pain to charge at them with a hostile titan around. (Though it might take out one or two demons.) My advice is wait for a siege and let the siegers take care of it or pull out the ballistae or catapults.

Oh and on the subject a funny thing happened recently. I made a spirit of ice  that appeares on cold maps sometimes and also was a megabeast (I think.). One day it drops by and one of my dwarves happens to be cutting a tree down right next to where it was, so naturally he legs it back to the fort with the spirit right behind untill the spirit runs right up and get's himself caged.

Now for people who did not read about what I made this spirit do, it is a gigantic heat sink. It makes everything around it mind numbingly cold over time. Care to guess what kind of troubles I had with dwarven frostbite in my fortress when I tamed it? (Yes I made it tamable in the end, though the one I showed everyone couldn't be tamed. I figured it would be funny.) Now I have it chained in a special chamber designed for nobles to walk into with a lever that closes the doors behind them. That way when they go in they can't get out and it's VERY cold in there.

Moral of the story. Magic freezers are great execution chambers... I tried using it as a cooler for my alchol, but it didn't work out. Dwarves should be happy to have cold beer... The fact that it's freezing cold outside and they risk frostbite when drinking it makes no difference. They should still like cold beer.

Oh and yeah I have alot of dwarves running around with bad frostbite, but it's so worth it to have that freezer.

Colossi (and iron men) drop statues, not titans.

I think [Megabeast] implicitly grants trap immunity, because I had the same problem with a dragon a few versions ago. It might be neat to have some kind of Lilliputian method of capturing megabeasts with elite wrestlers and chains down the line.

now i may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, as the two friendly blokes whom both linked the DungeonMaster article for me might atest.  i might not even know how to spell atest.

but i must both humbly and respectfully disagree on a couple of points.  i believe you are thinking of the colossus and/or the iron man.

the colossus (bronze colossus) leaves behind a masterwork bronze statue.  I have met one in adventure mode, but never killed one.

the Iron Man leaves behind a masterwork iron statue, and is trapable (i met one in dwarf mode on a reclaim, trapped, and later killed it).  Also, I hear the Iron Man travels time for the future of mankind, and tend to turn to steel in the great magnetic field.  rumor has it that he spends most of his time plotting vengence from the grave, which he will unleash on those whom he once saved.  Thus, I am usually a bit leary about keeping Iron Man statues in dining halls, lest they reanimate and cause more consternation than they are worth.

the Titan stats in creature_standard (i've never killed one, but i'm pretty confident about how the file reads) suggests that they are made of 2 parts bone, 2 parts meat, and 1 part fat, and are generally made at 10:1 ratios for a whopping 50 parts in total!  none of those parts are statues.

also, this particular Titan ran across 15 traps in one direction, then 15 cage traps in the other direction.  additionally, he took a slightly indirect route which would have increased the total number of cage traps that he hit.  additionally additionally, he spent some time in melee WHILE ON TOP of the cage traps, further increasing the number of traps he walked over and lengthing time spent on each trap square.

regarding the weapon traps, i usually see them turn from bright to dark red after they are sprung.  i did not observe this behavior in this instance.

also regarding the weapon traps (of which he walked over an absolute minimum of six), they are tripple weapon traps of at least three-bar (excellent?) quality and they puree trolls in one whack.  I have a hammerdwarf that fought the Titan.  the hammerdwarf takes SEVERAL whacks to just CRIPPLE a troll, and he only barely scratched the Titan (bruised some limbs, broke some toes).

thus, i would expect the traps to have at least scratched the Titan, to an equal or greater extent as the lone hammerdwarf.  this did not happen. combined with the fact that i did not notice the traps temporarily turning dark red, i dont think they went off at all.

and, in case its needed, i was hoping that this post was mildly humorous and might evoke a slight smile.  i am not trying to be snide or snippy.  i do appreciate the information you offered, as its considerably better than most of the nonesense that I spout.

edit: oops, Zomg pre-empted me while i was being long winded.  I thought i heard of someone capturing a dragon once, which is also a megabeast, and which has the tameable-nonstandard flag, or special-pet flag, or whatever its called that allows the dungeonmaster to tame it.

Sorry this post will be less than perfect but;

I recall reading on another thread that certain  megabeasts have a tag on them that marks them as a native of your map and so, just like your dwarves they will not spring traps.

However perhaps someone more versed in DF can tell you the name of this tag.

thats the most likely thing.  when comparing them to dragons, they have the Inteligent flag, which dragons lack.  also, dragons have the pet-exotic tag which Titans lack.

it shouldnt be pet-exotic, unless that tag has other implications than are documented on the wiki, that we have not figured out.

(Now I gotta go listen to that again, dammit)
