king queen arrival
« on: February 27, 2008, 11:34:00 pm »

i was typing when the queen arrived (Oddom Bodiceslips, I hope the name doesn't become embarassing when the humans visit).

The situation was that the fotress was big and rich enough.

So, since I was typing... what did it say?  Does anyone have the text?  I just saw a flash of gray and suddenly I was out in the wildnerness watching a bunch if migrants come in, with the queen.

It said "Build ridiculously large rooms engraved and filled with golden crap because the neediest useless bitch on the planet just came to your fort and she'll sentence every dwarf you have to death if you don't do as she pleases."

Paraphrased, obviously.

I've never had a queen or king, but if she's anything like my countess, good luck with all your legendary masons and weaponsmiths being hammered to death.

Actually, they're worse.  The king is completely insane, and will order several hundred hammerstrikes to every dwarf with a job even vaguely related to what his failed mandate was.  Sometimes, if there aren't enough with related jobs, he'll pick the unrelated ones as well, just to get a nice number.

The king must die.  Short lives the king.

well.. the artifact statue made the bedroom fine.
the artifact coffin made the tomb fine
the golden table silver throne and platinum statue made the dining room fine.

hardest part to make her happy was smoothing and engraving it all out, and coming up with the riduculous amount of coffers and weapons racks...

I expect a sudden swell of requirements leading up to many deaths, and I have since stepped up the creation of armor and weapons and recruitment for such missions.

As for the hammerer, I keep him well fed and locked away.  I have a few hammers on display in glass coffins, but I found it easiest to just build a dining room in the room I keep him in, throw in a few goblin cages just in case, and keep food handy a good distance from everyone else and near the hammerer.  I didn't implement the "dump food in via a chute" system as it was a bit late for that, but I can sneak food in and out when the hammerer is sleeping.

Anyway I have a good area where I assign my legendaries their sleeping quarters, maybe I will just have to put food into their rooms/area to keep them safe.

I suppose this arrival will greatly reduce the construction of the giant carved out spiral I was making for the hell of it.  (hey without cheating its a great way to find rare gems and native ore). Now I'll just have to dig down!  and make lots of excuses for the queen, too!

I have a food drop chute to my locked and channel-isolated Hammerer room, but I'm too lazy to bother with it, so I just pop the Hammerer with a menacing spike when she stops at the jailhouse door.  Just keep pulling the spike lever 'til she lets the prisoner go.
The key is to just use one spike, as you want the Hammerer to linger on alive but ineffectual as long as possible.
"A wounded Hammerer makes a healthy Fort."

I strangely lost my urge to kill nobles once I figured out they need the Hammerer to do any real damage.  Should that situation change I can always put retractable spikes between two doors.  It's like a roach motel for nobles.

Anyway Castle Shatagelot has turned into Castle Lagalot.  I don't so much "play"  DF anymore as keep it running all the time on a spare machine I occasionally log into to give orders.  Once I get my King can I start over, or are there further achievements for me to attain?  When can I declare victory?

He's an excuse for building ridiculously lavish accommodations.  Not to mention throne rooms with golden thrones.

ah well I think I lucked out with the artifact statue, coffin, and chest, and native platinum I found within a few minutes of starting.  I mined it out, smoothed it, and turned it into an office that became a royal throne room after some detailing.  The throne room was my first mayors office and hasn't needed an upgrade since.  Then it was the counts, then the dukes, now the queens.

But yes I agree, the hammerer is the real issue.  Without him people get sentenced to jail.  It's a lot easier to keep the hammerer locked away and useless than to keep trying to save people.

However, as a result, I did get some excellent recruits that way.  The hammerer seems to like to pick useful people, but now and then a lowly peasant gets grabbed.  Sometimes I find that by the time the legendary farmer accused of criminal activity... by the time he gets a few days into sparring, he's not half bad and hasn't broken his neck or something unlike peasants and soap makers I draft.

I use my legendaries as recruits.

It came as a real shock when I stopped recruiting (my army is huge, I don't need more right now.)  Sparta-turned-Athens makes all the same stuff, they just make it better, like several times better.

Sure they make great soldiers, but ... wow.
Umm, yeah, legendary workers are ALSO good at making legendary profits.  Who knew?   ;)
