They have no use for cute and fluffy.

From wiki:
Rabbits - Some dwarves like rabbits for their ears and their ability to burrow.
Large roach - Some dwarves like large roaches for their ability to disgust.
Fire snake - Some dwarves like fire snakes for their mystery.
Floating guts - Admired for their freakish appearance.

Starting to see a pattern?

Seems like pet value affects how long training wild creatures takes. Now it makes a bit more sense from a gameplay perspective.

Correct, the civ training levels also scale with the amount pet value a creature has (though domestication is not possible)

Any dwarf can prefer a rabbit and there are probably more that prefer rabbits than prefer rarer animals. But, doesn't it all get back to the preference? Those few dwarfs that do like those high-value creatures, will be psychotically dangerously ecstatic if they are able to claim one as a pet.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
