Self-drowning caravan?!
« on: January 19, 2017, 05:31:14 am »

I just had my yearly dwarven caravan arrive as usual from the north, but when they left... it was strangely hilarious. For some reason that I do not understand, the caravan decided to path directly into the ocean all across the western edge of my fortress and drown themselves. There is now a ton of loot for me to dig out during the next winter when the ocean freezes, but I wonder... has anyone ever seen this behavior before?

Do you have tides/waves? Perhaps they tried to path along the beach through the waves and got washed out to sea? I haven't done an oceanside embark yet, so I don't know if that's a thing, but it sounds plausible.

While there were waves, it didn't look like they were the cause. They might have been trying to path along the beach, I missed seeing the fate of the wagons, but the traders leading the pack animals went directly into the water without hesitation.

Another thing of note was it looked like they were heading towards the spot the local elven caravan arrives from in the winter when the sea is frozen.

There were a lot of capybaras in the area though... is it possible they got spooked into changing direction?

I've had them all abandon and scuttle their wagons, then leave via the caverns once or twice. It was unexpected, problematic, and led to further bugs. I think if they were headed for where the elven caravan goes, it's possible it's a similar bug.

Also: Wow, you ocean must be frozen for more than half the year if it's still frozen midspring! Brrrrrrr cold.

It's kinda useful because it gave me plenty of time to recover the goods when winter came around. It stays frozen all the way through late spring. Thinking of building a trap for the elven caravans that'll keep them stuck in place until the ice thaws so they take the plunge every year since they got all uppity about a jewel encrusted tower cap crutch I forgot was in a bin.

Aye, when an aquifer flooded one of my stockpiles, I learned that animals can survive getting frozen in a cage. So, go for it, unless you like to keep elves alive like I do.

Nothing like showing those hippies who the better society is like trading them dwarf junk for rare and exotic beasts. But they have sent me things like breeding giant leopards. So your elves, particularly in your case...

So, can this be weaponised? is the true question

Eh, it'd be incredibly hard. A simple drowning chamber in the depot would do just fine.

What was the water height level?  I've never done an embark close to the ocean due to FPS fears.

I have had caravans and visitors path through my moat, get stuck because they can't swim, and drown or die from dehydration (go figure) after a while.  In each case the water level wasn't at 7/7 and usually around 3/4 or so.
