Clueless Canadian Cautiously Queries About Computers.
« on: December 24, 2016, 02:24:45 am »

I could really use a hand. I am traveling a lot these days and I find it too expensive to bring my PC everywhere, so I am ditching it in favour (Hopefully) of a laptop.

My question to you all is what should I go for. I have never really purchased a lappy before and the sheer performance drop to cost ratio has me foaming. Feel free to recommend anything really as I am quite open to suggestions!

Thanks in advance to everyone who replies and I am sorry for being such a bother to those who are offended by my shameless cry for someone else to do my information gathering.

Edit: I changed the title as it was misleading.

Always glad to help, but we really need to know a bit more about what your going to use the computer for, what the limit on your spending is and what kind of weight, size and battery life your expecting out of it.

Tablets and smartphones are alternatives today as well, depending on what you want to do with them. Of course, they're also expensive, and usually not as versatile, but...

I am looking around the 1000-1500 CAD range. And I would like to be able to play at least Skyrim so I believe tablets are out. As for weight and screen size I am not too picky but I have always felt really insecure with a really thin laptop, almost like I would snap it by accident xD

If you want to alliterate, try this^.

Windows, Linux, Mac OS, BSD, unconcerned?

Apparently the nintendo switch will be able to play Skyrim. I assume, anyways, because it was being played by someone in the trailer thing they made to advertise the Switch.

That's not a computer, though, and not out yet.

Unfortunately I am completely unfamiliar with what laptops are good or bad, and which ones are good for gaming. I wrote them off entirely years ago because of the higher cost and the impracticability of replacing or upgrading components. (I assembled my last two computers myself, using components from newegg and amazon.)

Oh man, that's some good alliteration!

As for OS I have a Raspberry pi 2 for all my Linux-ing. So I think I am just going to stick with Windows. I have a small problem in the form of a gigantic amount of Steam games and the majority are windows only.

I *do* want a Switch but that'll come later :P Nintendo junk are the only consol type things I really buy anymore. Gotta hunt them virtual Mansters, if you know what I mean ;)

Until this decision I was also in the tower > laptop camp but these commitment issues are making me move a lot and I can't be dragging an entire rig all over the second biggest country! Hences the need for something more portable.

Thanks so far for the replies!! I thought I was going to get buried for sure xD

There are so many laptops out there it's really hard to tell these days.   While I have never regularly used a laptop myself, I did sometimes sell them as part of a computer parts store for folks who wanted a laptop.  We custom built towers for folks but just sold pre-built laptops with and customized them and such for the folks.  As for brands I always preferred working with the lenovos we had, and tended to recommended them to our customers.  But it's probably a matter of preference.  More a 'what feels right' than any kind of brand loyalty thing.

I can't really give you a particular make and model I'm afraid but there are a few things to look out for.   CPU, RAM, HD/SSD, and GPU are just as important on laptops as they are on towers.  I've heard there are some slot in graphics cards you can slot into some laptops these days but I would assume that it would be difficult if not impossible to upgrade those parts later.  So what you get yer probably stuck with.  Might not be able to easily toss an old graphics card and replace it with a new one in a few years like you can a tower.

If you play a lot of rougelikes (DF, Cataclysm DDA, Hengband and all) you are probably going to want to make sure the keyboard has a numpad.  A lot of laptop keyboards don't.  You can plug in an external keyboard like you can with a tower if you have to, but that increases the bulk.  You may also want to look into a small laptop mouse or something as well.  You can't really do any kind of gaming like skyrim on a touchpad. (though I'm sure there's folks that practiced enough to get good.)

Battery life is important if you are not going to be near a power source when gaming.  Laptops salesmen will often tell you their battery life, keep in mind that what they tell you will probably be longer than what you would practically get while gaming.  Battery life estimates are often given with all the power saving features active.  When gaming a good number of those power save features need to be turned off or otherwise disabled.  If you expect to be able to plug in at all times you are actively playing and can keep it off or otherwise in low power mode between plugs, battery life is less of a concern.

And this last one is more something I heard of than have any kind of experience with, but I hear good gaming laptops (which you should be able to get with that budget) can get quite hot.  You'll probably want to look into a cooling pad of some kind to rest the laptop on when playing.  Both to keep the flesh of your legs unmolten, and to help the laptop dissipate heat.  Often times laptops (and a lot of towers these days) will throttle their power levels and performance  when getting near their temperature redzones.  Some kind of supplementary cooling system will again, add some bulk, but help keep the laptop running at max performance and keep your nether bits unmelted.

Yep. I had a $2k US laptop (~2013 vintage) that could (barely) run Skyrim modded on high-ish settings. That was 2GB VRAM, 8GB RAM, a somewhat old now quad-core i7, and it ran so god damn hot that its packaging transformed into a stand that kept it elevated ~2 inches above whatever you put it on. Even then, if you played something resource-intensive for a couple hours it would get hot enough on areas of the keyboard above critical components that your hands would sweat, and that was with a pair of fans providing constant airflow across the keyboard and through the gap underneath.

And that was about the best gaming laptop I could find, insofar as that its only problems were the heat and an unwillingness to properly use the NVidia card instead of the intel chipset. For your price that's probably about what you're going to get now.

Number one piece of advice I'd give is to thoroughly research problems with a model you like before you buy it. If it has any serious issues you can bet that there are people bitching about them on Tomshardware or something.

Aurora on small monitors:
1. Game Parameters -> Reduced Height Windows.
2. Lock taskbar to the right side of your desktop.
3. Run Resize Enable

If you just need something "moveable" rather than "portable" and all-in-one may be a better choice. Basically an all-in-one is a laptop with a larger screen and no keyboard. Plug in a keyboard and mouse and you are good to go.

That said it may be harder to find one suitable for gaming, as there is a far greater selection of laptops available.

You can also get some really powerful mini-ITX systems nowadays. In this case you still need a monitor, but the tower is a thin blade or little box (easier to pack). In this case I recommend picking a monitor that can fit in a padded bag or box of some kind together with your keyboard, mouse, etc (so avoid anything with a bulky stand that can't fold or whatever). For best results it would probably be best to build your own system, as many pre-built ITX systems can be underpowered...

I am, of course, assuming that you want something easy to pack into a car and move, but otherwise leave parked on a desk at your current residence.

I'm eyeing up the refresh of the Dell XPS 15 series myself, which have some reasonably powerful hardware along with a roughly 2KG (4 pounds-ish) weight, though they may be stretching the limits of your budget.

In any case the video card these will come with, the 1050 and 1050ti ones, might be worth waiting for as they have enough performance in them to run skyrim at full HD without breaking the bank or melting your desk (they run at a 75W TDP). They should also show up in lower price ranges from the liked of MSI, ASUS, Lenovo, etc.
