Plugging the Well
« on: December 27, 2016, 12:36:26 pm »

I've been playing for a while, but I've never been sure how to keep forgotten beasts from flying up my underground wells. Can you build a grate or something? Any suggestions? Dancing with flying forgotten beasts if fun and all, but I've been wondering this for quite some time.

The only way I know is to create a cistern, as grates will block the well.

Not if the grate is located a z or two below the well (this still worked in 40., and I have heard nothing about it changing.)  A cistern is still safer, alternately a properly constructed pump stack (while potentially dangerous to FPS) can be made secure from building destroyers.

I had a grate one z level down, and it didn't work. I don't know though.

Pump water through a grate into a room, and then sink the well into that room. That should stop anything getting through. To make sure, block the room off from the caverns with fortifications and wall the door off.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.
