As far as I've seen, werebeasts, stealthed necros, goblin snatchers, and kobolds all enter the map stealthed and appear on the unit list when detected. Thus, the necros you see on the list at the start of a black tower siege shouldn't be able to hide (in theory, it ought to be possible for such units to use a cave on your embark, move down there and out of visibility in the unmapped parts, but I don't know if they have the smarts for that. I doubt gremlins do it either).

after thinking nice and hard about my options, and waiting two seasons, I ended up proceeding to rush the horde with a single squad, with seven of them being legendaries ( two Axe lords, a swordmaster, a spearmaster, two hammer lords, and an elite marksdwarf ) and with the horde being armed to the teeth, and armored as well, I sent them in with mixed opinions how they'd do. (Especially after my elite marksdwarf rushed to the frontlines, then promptly got his head chopped off by a gobbo axeman corpse.) HOWEVER. in a moment of clarity, I had built a catapult+fortifications about a month beforehand, and ordered my High Master Siege Operator launch dolomite on the horde. while none of the shots killed anything, they did actually help...severed an arm there, a few legs there, sent some flying, falling over, and 'losing hold' of their weapons and shields, which I can assume increased my lone squad's survival rate. by the end of the fight, there was roughly 60 zombies or so dead on the ground, while I on the other hand, lost only three from my squad. (Though among those three was the swordmaster and spearmaster) All in all, worth it in the end, siege is over, and got a nice influx of armor+weapons as well  :D

I was about suggest you can likely take them in a fair fight but it looks like you already proved that. Undead are not the Gods of carnage they used to be, just watch out for the big ones. If you see undead ogres etc. then watch out. Extremely large undead should be treated like forgotten beasts where if you do dare face them in a fair fight make sure you swarm them like 10 on 1.
