Bought a Blue Peahen from the caravan. Dorfs bring it to the stockpile.

Tried to assign it to a pasture but it's not listed. Checked the z->animals, it's not there either. Placed the cage on pasture, tried to release it via (a)ssign, and it's not listed in there either despite it definitely contained inside the cage!

Is this a bug? Or did I miss something?

PS: I've bought a generic hen from the traders as well and was able to pasture it normally. It's been laying eggs in my nest box without issues.

Edit: Okay, this is weird. I was going to try to release the peahen using levers, but once the lever was built and I went to check the cage, it was no longer in there. I've no idea where it went and I can't find it now since it's not listed in any screen.

It's probably a bug.
I've seen a similar issue when I used DFHackery to collect all the junk a bugged caravan dumped at the embark edge. There were cages with animals among these, and these cages were placed in my animal stockpile, but the animals showed up on none of the unit screens, nor on the stocks animal screen. DFHack revealed the animals were actually marked as dead. Thus, I suspect the peahen was actually dead on arrival (if they die en route on the embark they actually show up as a corpse, so that's not the case).

Could it have starved while it was in the cage? I may have left it in the stockpile for a long time before I remembered to put it on pasture (even though it's not a grazer). But if I'm not mistaken, dorfs will feed animals inside cages.

Grazers you buy in cages can starve to death in the cage if left for a number of months, but non grazers can not. Also, a creature that starved to death while in a cage would still remain in the cage as a corpse (but beware of reanimations, as reanimated corpses teleport out of the cage on reanimation).
Dorfs do not really feed animals in cages. They do bring food to animals as a part of the taming process (and neither the dorfs nor the animals are too picky about the kind of food: grazers eat meat and predators eat vegetables). I've also heard it said pet owners bring food to their pets, but I haven't seen that myself.
