I'm starting to get used to the cash flow/bonus cash flow stuff.  It's all looking backwards, it's the YTD figures, so yeah a lot of it is not helpful.  The income/deficit is a reasonable predictor since it's mainly based on tax income vs maintenance, neither of which change all THAT much unless you fiddle with tax/build a bunch of stuff (and if you do build, you should already have planned the impact).   For bonus income, I have to look on the detail screen, trade and resort income is the actual recurring bit, you can KIND of expect that will roughly continue like that although you have to estimate the yearly impact from whatever the current YTD figures are, so don't bother trying this in January heh.

Now my rant, my GOD this game is bastardly about some kinds of information.
*WHOOP* *WHOOP* *WHOOP*  "SIR SIR ENEMY FRIGATE  574584 IS ATTACKING OUR ESCORT 8432632!!!"
"Hmm, is it just one frigate or part of a huge fleet?"
"SIR NO IDEA SIR"
"Is it near something crucial or just some frontier skirmish?"
"SIR NO IDEA SIR"
"Thank you so much, helpful as always.  By the way, why hasn't my main fleet attacked as ordered?"
"SIR OUT OF FUEL SIR"
"Whyyyyy?"
"SIR LAST WEEKS REPORT OF ENEMY FRIGATE 9786439 ATTACKING GAS MINING STATION 2934520 and ENEMY FRIGATE 230985693245 attacking GAS MINING STATION 457686787624095 AND ENEMY ESCORT 3984765938475398  ATTACKING GAS MINING STATION 098375406938045830 DESTROYED ALL THREE OF THOSE STATIONS AND THEY WERE THE ONLY FUEL STATIONS ON THAT SIDE OF THE EMPIRE"
"Lovely, lovely, so you report any time some random raider fires a missile at any random object in the empire, but don't report on or even keep a list of crucial installations that were DESTROYED.  Or even when ANY station is destroyed."
"SIR YES SIR"
"Whyyyyy?"
"SIR THATS THE WAY IT'S DONE SIR"
*WHOOP* *WHOOP* *WHOOP* SIR ENEMY ESCORT 64929367 IS ATTACKING MINING STATION 72532485792375!!!
*WHOOP* *WHOOP* *WHOOP* SIR ENEMY DESTROYER 4875829384 IS ATTACKING MINING STATION 3947698375997876!!!
*WHOOP* *WHOOP* *WHOOP* SIR PIRATE ESCORT 94475897899993444 IS ATTACKING MINING STATION 677835478957894776!!!
"Inform the Intelligence Agents that the next time they detect an assasination plot against me, don't stop it."

ED: And yeah I got an alert sound muting mod really quickly after starting to play this damn thing, holy cow that thing was spiking my blood pressure :p

Decided to pick this up again recently using the Extended AI improvement mod (lots of new races, supposedly better AI).

Tried a game with 38 empires and almost every race in the game on the hardest difficulty, with research set to 999 cost and pre-warp start.

Gotta say, that was an interesting one... It spawned me (Ikkuro) in the same system as the Keskudon, who didn't like me at all. So I ended up having a pre-warp war. Things got interesting when a couple local pirate empires showed up and we started funding attacks on each other.

I eventually managed to knock out their spaceport and even managed to research troop transports, but they continuously churned out so many troops that even with a huge fleet of troop transports and my planet hiring troops for years for a big invasion we still couldn't get enough men on the ground to win a ground battle. So instead we just glassed the planet down to 40% quality and let them be. And then a big pirate fleet came in and wiped out my space port and all ships. I think they used the last of their money to hire pirates to attack me, because they didn't try building another spaceport.

is there an enhanced AI mod that does not add a bunch of fanmade races from popular sci-fi shows?

Or can I use the AI and just disable the extra races in that mod?

The one I'm playing with is:

http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3647528

It has the Extended races, some weapons rebalancing (big boost to fighter bays and boosts to some weapons he found to be underpowered), and AI tweaks to help them be less dumb.

You can get the version without the Extended races too if you want, although I actually like the races added by the Extended mod.

Since it's easy to miss, thought I'd advertise it here too.

Distant Worlds: Universe is going for $20 over at BundleStars. Limited stocks, limited time, cheapest it's ever been.
