Child observers?
« on: November 19, 2016, 09:13:50 pm »

Just noticed some of the children had high observer skills (up to grand master level).
I wonder what happened to them. Perhaps a bugged fight with keas?

Watching other dwarves spar/fight.

Yes, any fighting, including sparring, trains Observer for anyone within sight radius. I have often exploited this by placing the militia barracks in the middle of the tavern.

Those who can't do, watch.

That's cool.
Though I don't see how observer alone can be a very useful skill.

It's crazily useful in adventure mode because it tells you what attack is coming and what it is attacking.  Whether or not the AI uses it in fights, I don't know.  It would be interesting to compare the high observer children to normal peasants when they grew up.

Yeah, maybe but fighters train observer skill pretty fast.
A regularly trained soldier usually becomes legendary observer first.

Observer is useful in spotting ambushers; it increases dwarves' chances of survival when they can see a were or a thief from a distance instead of right in the next square.

According to the wiki, Observer increases the chance to spot stealthed enemies, and provides some combat advantages, e.g. less likely to be surprised by an opponent's charge.

Awesome. So I could have the children watch adults spar as education.
