I'm curious about long-term tree growth.  If tree A is eclipsing tree B such that tree B is crescent shaped over multiple z-levels, and tree A is then chopped down, will tree B "fill-out" into the empty space over time, or will it always be a sad crescent shaped tree?

I don't know the answer, but I suspect a tree grows into available space "randomly" when it's time for it to grow, and so would fill out the space, at least partially. However, I also suspect no more growth will happen after it's reached its last growth stage.
