Question about the forums
« on: September 14, 2016, 04:58:08 am »

Why does the forum search feature suck? If I want to search something - say, to see if someone's already made a thread about 'A current affair bias', it first makes me cut the word 'a' out, then presents me with a single post. Searching for 'current affair' gives me 7 pages of posts with the word 'current' and/or the word 'affair' in them.

Once I couldn't find an old forum game I made so I typed in some keywords into search. After nothing showed up, went through my posts in my profile and found that I had searched for the exact title.

You might want to try the search function in the bar with your profile and logout instead of the one off to the right. It has a few more parameters.

Honestly, I usually just google 'bay 12 [topic I want to search for]' and get better results than with the forum search tool.

Yeah, the forum search tool doesn't usually even find every instance of whatever you're searching for.

If there are multiple posts in a thread that contain your query, it generally only shows you the first one chronologically. This makes it hard to find anything that gets brought up multiple times in a thread unless you're specifically searching that thread.

You can use a google search and preface it with site:www.bay12forums.com

Also, the forum does allow inputting wildcard characters. Pretty sure you can use ? to represent one character, and you can definitely use * to search for multiple characters. So Affair? would give results that include affairs, while Certain* would give Certainly Certainty Certain and so on.

Oh, the reason forum searches suck? Because searches are surprisingly hard to get right and organize by relevence to what you want when using a database structure, unless you're willing to invest google level of dollars into the system.

^+

Remember, Google became a global powerhouse pretty much solely because they designed a search system with good retrieval that could parse natural language.

You can also click the magnifying glass next to the search bar on the right. Goes to the same place.
