Is social media "communities" become a fad? I know WotC also removed all their forums and the like some time ago with "something something social media something modern" as reasoning.

Business and outreach reasons usually. You generally reach less people on official forums nowadays than through social media. For a forum, you not only need to have a community manager but also moderators. Meanwhile, you're better off reaching one of the devs and interacting with them on twitter and/or tumblr compared to their forums in all likelihood, and reddit, tumblr and twitter double up as potential advertising. At the same time you just got tohave the community manager pop in those places and they typically provide their own moderators. Then you have Nexus mods and basically the only reason to have a forum anymore is for the MMO community they still have, as it's their one business that turns in a bigger gross the longer the player is in it compared to one time purchases for games.

tl;dr it's just cheaper to not have forums and more effective to swap community managers to social media.

So basically they want people to argue on reddit and manage to get nothing done through twitter.

Update: Forums are locked but still readable for the next 6 weeks. Save any threads you might want for reference info, or just bookmark the new forums.  Mods are still available for download, no stated end date at this point but one will probably come. 

It's sad to see the Bioware forums go down. I just hope the devs are actually paying attention to the fan forums, because interesting long-form discussion isn't really supported by reddit or twitter.
