Hmmm. . . Finally some progress

Hit the crystal again, this time right on the crack.
A chunk of crystal breaks off along the crack. You deposit it in your backpack.

Status: Unharmed. Armed with a holstered six-shot revolver, fully loaded with seemingly normal bullets. Wearing a soot-covered poncho, a helmet illuminating your way and a backpack. Wielding a pickaxe. Your backpack contains about a half-pound of crystals now.

NPC Relations: None.

Keep mining, paying careful attention to the rhythm of everybody's picks, something's going on.
The picks sing like bells struck by hammers as those mining attempt to free crystal from wall. Your instincts fail you not, there is an uneasy air in the cavern and you get the idea that something is lurking yet unseen in the mine...

NPC Relations: None.

give Jim a friendly wave before trying again at digging out some crystals. Ponder my new un-life and sorrowfully miss my old life.
Jim waves back, unsure of your intentions. He begins to mine. You begin to mine. A lucky strike has you putting a sizeable chunk of crystal into your backpack.

NPC Relations: Jim, wary.

Keep on excavating the crystal.  Have I ever seen this stuff before?
Yes... you seem to recall having seen something like this in an illustrated tome. You can't recall exactly what it is, but it does seem to have some sort of magical properties.

NPC Relations: None.

Continue with this strategy, hitting large crystals until they crack, then hit them hard right on the crack.

Gentle...folk, I think there's something here with us.  Let's not split up.

Keep mining for crystals, but seriously, keep a non-existent eye out for ANYTHING.

OOh! Idea! Lets team up with jim! We split the crystals we mine out together 50-50! well, not actually split them, but make it so that both of us get roughly the same weight worth in our bags.
"Hey jim, wanna work on this together? We'll probably get more out of it as a team than swinging at a chunk of wall alone."

Giving a shrug, Robert walks into the mine to try out his new pickax.

If we did, +1, but I think they either got scrambled by the tractor beam or got blown out into space.
This is a normal discussion, folks.

That's exactly what you do, but you're not having so much luck this time.

Status: Unharmed. Armed with a holstered six-shot revolver, fully loaded with seemingly normal bullets. Wearing a soot-covered poncho, and a backpack. Wielding a pickaxe. You have a few ounces of crystal in your backpack now.

NPC Relations: None.

Continue with this strategy, hitting large crystals until they crack, then hit them hard right on the crack.
You continue to make cracks in the crystal but they're not quite breaking from each other when you hit the fault lines. Meanwhile, something's going on with the mist on the floor, especially deeper in...

You suspect your words might be falling on deaf ears and not just because noone has ears anymore. The mist begins to congeal around your legs and you feel as though you weigh more somehow. You see something moving but you're not sure if it's real or not.

Jim shakes his head and walks deeper into the passage way beyond the anteroom.

You swing and the pick glances off. You try again and chip away at the crystal a bit.

"Erm, this mist...is anyone else feeling heavy standing in it?"

Try and avoid the mist, either by stepping away from it further into the mine, or stepping onto any available raised platform.

Give a couple more tries at digging out some crystal, and then exit the mine. I want to find out what it's for.

Go further in. Investigate the source of the mist.

Try to hit the rock face where it meets the gem. If that doesn't work, stick the pick in a crack, to pry the thing out like a crowbar.
