Try a custom worldgen: pocket world with minimal history and # civs, turn off all cavern layers, magma etc, reduce layer thickness and sky height.

Nah.. to much hassle and it would be a rather boring world wouldn't be? However to a super mega project it might be of use.

I'm curious as to how a tank would evolve. Would it climb out of the primordial ooze wiggling it's track-nubs, feeding on smaller jeeps before crawling onto the shore having evolved proper treds?
My ship exploded midflight, but all the shrapnel totally landed on Alpha Centauri before anyone else did.  Bow before me world leaders!

Well, minimal history and civs, but what about creatures and savagery? If we can up those and run a surface embark, there's the possibility of bad things coming without you being able to lock yourself up.

Well, now we can do it with the 64bit release. I'm currently going with a 16x16 embark. However it's clear ti will have a early FPS death since right of the bat it barely gets to 30 fps. It embarked on a place with a river and a waterfall, they where frozen when arrived and defrosted a few moments later. The effort of starting the water movement dipped the frames to 4 per second. Then it got back to 30~38 fps.

quad 2.4 GHz processors
Don't remeber graphics card, but it's got 1024 memory

I'll tell you guys what happens.

You are a brave one.

So many necros lately when people can make a new topic, or even just quote the thread and/or link to it. Not that you 'need' to make a new topic when there's already threads of people doing 16x16 with tailored worldgens or not. Post to r/dwarffortress with screenshots if you feel the need. I just dislike 6+ year threads coming back up which just confuses or gives wrong information to new players who may not notice the dates. Also, to avoid that melting/water movement fps drop just turn off temperature calculations as it is to be expected

Thread was a bit over 2 years inactive.
Seemed relevant enough.
Didn't know of other new threads about this.

But bringing up someone's 6 year old PC specs in a re-started discussion on 16x16 embarks in current DF is pretty much misleading, irrelevant necro-quoting. Besides at least one new topic started on 16x16 embarks when DF64 was released.

Generate a 3x3 world and use it to test the 16x16 embark.
I explained how to do it here:
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=159216.msg7077607#msg7077607
There is an already genned world on the thread if you want to use it without generating your own world.

The positive points of a 3x3 world over a 17x17 one is that it will be faster;
Also the 16x16 embark will represent a larger part of the entire world.

A 48x48 embark in a 3x3 world would be pretty cool.
