I remember seeing someone on this forum call Minecraft a "DF clone." (Years ago, IIRC)

That's a fairly ignorant label, IMO.

Minecraft is not DF outside of resource gathering, IMO.

Much better examples of blatant DF clones would be Gnomoria, which is essentially DF-lite (names and dates changed to protect the innocent), and Towns, which evolved over time to become something slightly different.

Rimworld is it's own game by far. While we could easily say "It's kinda like Dwarf Fortress", that in no way matches the level of blatant remake that Gnomoria has.

Anyhow there are two uses for clone really
1) A game is trying to work very similarly to a pre-existing game. Often used when a subgenre doesn't exist. (Minecraft gets Minecraft clone because "Sandbox" means nothing)
or
2) A Derogatory term for a game that is attempting to steal fans from a particular game by copying its mechanics instead of coming up with their own.

And frankly... Given people have called Monster Rancher a Pokémon clone (IN SPITE being nowhere similar and Monster Rancher being created long before Pokémon) it doesn't always have merit.

Though I still think people are overlabling Doom Clone here. I don't think EVEN AT THE TIME all first person shooters were called Doom clones. Especially the original Quake.

Kruniac: Exactly. That isn't the only example like that either. Personally I think "x clone" just reflects the speaker's thoughts and feelings and therefore it isn't possible to standardize a meaningful definition for it, beyond, perhaps, the strictest kind which would encompass things like gnomoria.

(I think it was popular to call terraria a Minecraft clone, as well, and I don't personally think that it is. But I don't agree with calling duke nukem 3d a doom clone either)

It's important to remember with the Doom Clone thing that the only Doom Clones we still remember are the ones that were good enough to stand on their own merits.

Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein 3d, Quake, etc.  But there were tons of straight up ripoffs too that sank into obscurity.
First-person shooters were known as Wolfenstein 3D clones before Doom came out. After that they became Doom clones.

Monster Rancher being created long before Pokémon

First Pokemon release: February 27, 1996 in Japan
First Monster Rancher release: November 30, 1997 in Japan

Monster Rancher may not be a Pokemon clone, but it certainly didn't come first and was likely intended to cash in on the Pokemon craze.

Ignoring that if you use the proper dates it means that they would have had to of made the game in 6 months (and the game is quite complex).

The actual game it is closest to being a cash in on is actually Dragon Quest (Though in all fairness all those monsters are mostly "generic")

But yes your right it did come out second.

Generally clones are seen as bad because there will be hundreds of clones and generally only a few good ones.

Remember Towns:

Abandoned

Gnomaria:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/224500/

Abandoned

This only leads to a worser image of a clone.

However, Rimworld on the other hand is absolutely fantastic but it's only a rare gem found next to the pile of crap that try to clone DF.

well they do bring something new to the genre, like not having a horrible interface and graphics.

Ultimately I guess the problem with Towns and Gnomera other then SEVERELY underestimating how much work actually goes into the game...

Is that they didn't really have an identity of their own...
