How do you design the temple(s)?
« on: July 24, 2016, 02:50:15 am »

I've played DF years ago but I'm new to DF0.43. It's exciting that I can build temples in fortress now. But I have no idea what the temples should look like. How large is the dancing floor? Should I build some valuable golden status? And which is better, a huge temple for the Many-Faced God or many temples for each religion?

The dance floor needs to be at least 5x5 but aside from that it doesn't matter how you design it. I prefer the Many-Faced God approach but making temples for each god works. It can be a little tedious to have a temple for each god though because if you accept petitions you start getting goblin and human gods thrown in there too. My current fort I have 15 or so different gods in the list.

I dig out a 10x10 room and put a table and a chest in the corner.

Sometimes I even smooth the walls.

So the room's size and value worth nothing? Dig a 5x6 room and build a table and some boxes then it's a perfect temple?

I just designate an area in my control center, right next to the tavern. Empty floor (not even a chest), and pan theistic. My latest attempt at dedicated temples got screwed up: I had a pan theistic temple for everyone, and dedicated ones for citizens only (restricted at the time of creation, before unpausing). Despite that, visitors started to come to e.g. study at the library and pray at a dedicated (and thus forbidden) temple. These buggers just milled around, although they'd occasionally use the omni one. I caved in and opened the dedicated temples, and then visitors just poured into them, in particular one of them (25+ of the 50 visitor limit at the same time). In addition, visitors who came to petition or study as well as pray could spend half a year in the temple before hauling their lazy asses to petition or to the library. This was 0.42.05, but I haven't seen anything indicating this mess has been cleaned up.

Correct.

Room value doesn't matter for a temple. Dwarves don't get a happy thought like "prayed in a royal temple recently." You could make the temple your dining hall I suppose but there is no point to doing that. Any 5x5 open space works. Sometimes I just put mine on the surface so dwarves won't get cave adapted. Basically, they can pray in your refuse pile and not care. I know that is probably a bit of a let down, but Toady added temples when he added taverns and libraries as a place holder. I imagine he will do more with it when he does more with religion. Possibly in the next few updates since he is working on artifacts and relics.

Edit: Sometimes I combo the temple, library, and tavern if I don't feel like spreading out much. You can designate a location from a zone and you can layers zones. You can make a legendary dining hall with a good sized dance floor, make that your tavern, then add two zones on top of that for the library and temple.

I like putting at least a single statue in temples on the off chance someone topples them so they might be cursed to become a night creature, but YMMV on that :p

Beyond that, I tend to make it semi-overlapping with tavern, sharing the instrument stockpile/display area.

Recently, I've considered putting 1x1 temple zones into workshops, so the worker can send their prayers without walking a distance, but for all I know it might result in all the dwarves piling into the latest new 1x1 to all pray there. Experiments shall be needed.

I would be very cautious if trying 1*1 zones. There have been at least a couple of bugged fortresses where a 1*1 tavern zone caused severe stuttering (as in nothing happening for a number of seconds, running for half a minute...) as visitors tried to path to the tavern and somehow rejecting the occupied single tile.

I use a central staircase design with many smallish levels. I use digfort to dig out circular levels. I devote one level to temple. It's just a big, pretty circle. Tons of statues. Tons of instruments. Tons of colored windows.
