How to get an artifact out of a bugged wheelbarrow?
« on: July 12, 2016, 12:10:41 pm »

Hi, all.

My dwarves have run afoul of the dreaded wheelbarrow bug.  I have therefore discontinued the use of wheelbarrows in my fortress, and pitched all but one of my wheelbarrows into the volcano.

In most cases, I was able to rescue the contents by marking them for dumping (to be dumped separately from the wheelbarrow), then reclaiming them.  However, the last wheelbarrow contains an artifact chain shirt which I'd rather not lose.  Artifacts cannot be marked for dumping.

How can I get my artifact out of the wheelbarrow, so I can complete the great purge?  I am willing to dfhack my way to victory if necessary.

Thanks!

Wheelbarrows are containers, so minecarts' the solution:

Another alternative is to sell the wheelbarrow to the caravan. Anything inside it will be removed when brought to the trade depot. If you're hell bent on destroying it, you just have to make sure it gets removed from things to trade once brought to the depot.

Is it wooden? Can you just drop it in magma and set fire to it? Or if it's metal, melt it off the artifact?

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Provided the artifact isn't made out of wood, in which case it would be set on fire eternally.

But then you can make a Dwarven Steam Room, right?

Or would that need it to be made of a a fuel material?

Artifact recovered, thanks folks.  I used the trade depot method (I was afraid to try it before because I was worried I'd accidentally sell my artifact).

Then I bought the wheelbarrow back and tossed it in the volcano.

Flammable artifacts can be extinguished with a pond zone set to be filled above them. I nearly lost a fort to the smoke from one once, after a clown attack.
