Author Topic: My dwarves are putting every available bucket near ponds and leaving them there  (Read 744 times)

I have no clue why or how to stop them, they refuse to put the buckets anywhere except near the ponds. The only other place I can manage to get buckets is a refuse pile...but after that nothing I do will get rid of them, I reclaimed the buckets but the dwarves don't even touch them.

Right now I have a few dozen wooden buckets sitting around the two ponds outside my fort...and at least a dozen metal buckets have disappeared entirely.

One of the stupid things dorfs do is to leave buckets all around the place with water in the buckets, and since there's stuff in the buckets, they won't use those bucket to put stuff in (including the same kind of stuff). One reason for filling buckets and then just drop them is that they'd taken on a helpful "give water" to someone else, and said someone just went and had a drink, and so no longer was thirsty.
The key to making the buckets available again is to empty them, but that's not entirely easy (I'm not sure myself). It's said hauling the buckets to the trade depot (and then not sell them) will cause them to be emptied. Marking the water inside of buckets for dumping may or may not work.

They can be emptied with DFHack, if you're into DFHack.  One method is to use d-b-d to paint a "dump item" designation on the buckets, then autodump to some location.  The bucket and the water will be dumped separately.  The water will be an odd-looking item laying on the ground, and the bucket will be empty.

Workflow also has a "drybuckets" option, but workflow is such a pita to me that I avoid it.  I liked it better when drybuckets was a separate script.

The problem with using DFHack is the couple of months until it's available for the latest DF version...

I think you can just let the dwarves dump the buckets out on their own with d-b-d...That said, it is indeed annoying checking over walkways and water sources and dbding the buckets.

Go into stocks screen and check your metal bucket count? You might be able to mark them for melting from there (100% efficient, but mainly useful for finding them - you can cancel the melt job you ordered and remove melting marking once they've brought it to smelter.)

I try to remember that not everyone likes or uses DFHack, but sometimes I forget.

I just tried moving some water-filled buckets to the trade depot, and no dice.  Moving them to the depot did not empty them, and they arrived full of water.  Nor could the water be sold out of the bucket separately.

Dumping the bucket (either with k-d or with d-b-d) didn't work - the water came along for the ride regardless of whether it was, itself, selected.  Dumping only the water and not the bucket was similarly ineffective, accomplishing no movement of anything.

Try forbidding the water inside the bucket (but not the bucket) and then moving the buckets to the trade depot.

That did work.  So that is one solution for you, diglet.
