Are 43.05 dragons bugged? (solved)
« on: July 08, 2016, 03:58:16 pm »

Spoiler: modified post (click to show/hide)

Please ignore. I was just misreading the "you block dragonfire" text and "dragon breathes fire" text as the same thing. Th first is the fire spreading so it did seem as though it was inconsistent with the cool down interval, which is wasn't. Good times with confusion.

50 ticks is actually absurdly quick. I would not surprised to see something using a 50 tick interaction every second or two.

50 ticks in Adventure Mode or Arena Mode is a decent chunk of time. A dwarf at 1.000 walking speed will take 9-10 ticks to cross one tile. Most standard attacks are 6 ticks. Quick attacks and grab attacks are 4 ticks.

For example, giant cave spiders and web shooting titans/FBs shoot web at 30 tick interval. If an adventurer is running a "same z-level combat", they'll have that window of opportunity to strike, before needing to dodge the next web shot which is not all that feasible to do consistently.

But more to the point, in previous versions when I've run arena mode tests or during Adv mode runs, the dragons did adhere to the 50 tick interval. Here in 43.05, they're breathing during every exchange, which is unusual.

Ticks don't translate well from turn-based gameplay to real-time gameplay. At any decent fps rate you'll see the turns go by so fast it looks like there is almost no recharge time for breath or web attacks. Your dwarves are also too stupid to handle these special attacks well and will be easily finished by them if they don't cheese the enemy first.

Although I haven't tried the new version, dragons have always been machine gun flame throwers every time I have encountered them in the past. They literally just spew fire constantly. Unless the fps is running down below like fifty you will get more than one blast of flame per second. If you are getting like 20 blasts per second then something has changed and is likely busted.

FPS and real time gameplay are Fort Mode considerations. Apologies guys, for not being all that clear: I'm writing about this from a purely Adventure Mode/Arena Mode perspective.

Adventure Mode is turn based, where *all the ticks matter* and more importantly, in combat they can almost all be accounted for. Arena Mode, when run like Adventure Mode, is also turn based, and likewise almost all combat ticks can be managed and are accounted for.

Dragons have always been predictable prior to 43.04. Technically they still are. Prior to 43.04, you've always been able to have 3-4 mutual melee exchanges with said dragon(s) inbetween breaths, presuming neither of you are dodging to another tile.

Best edit the OP too or you'll get another 5 pages regarding FPS and fortress time as people continue to answer before reading the thread.

You can still account for ticks in fort mode with the wait (.) key.

Just did some Arena mode testing with a dragon.  It definitely wasn't breathing fire faster than 50 ticks as far as I could see.  In fact, based on . presses, it was usually breathing fire closer to 60-80 ticks.

No idea why you're seeing different results.

Just re-ran the test. Ignore what I was saying. I was just misreading the "you block dragonfire" text and "dragon breathes fire" text as the same thing. I'm not sure that isn't for 10 adv mode timekeeping units or something. I've had a dwarf get hit by a max speed minecart, skid along the ground, stand up, be no longer stunned and do something else in a single step.

Combat can be similarly fast.
