Tree Growing Out Of Water
« on: July 08, 2016, 05:27:00 pm »

I'm trying to wall off my first cavern, using cave-ins to block the water. But the space I need for the cave-in is blocked by tree branches, and the trees are growing out of the water. The wiki seems to say that trees block cave-ins, so I've gotta cut down the trees first to clear space. But I can't reach the base of the trees because they're underwater.

The wiki says "Trees can be cut from any point, not only from ground level." So I dug a path to put my woodcutters adjacent to the trunk, one z above. Still no cutting. What am I missing?

Trees can be cut at major branches, but some cave trees are "protected" by an outer ring of whatever it is. Also, cutting trees a bit up can often cause injury to the wood cutter, as he's may fall, or falling logs may smash the platform he's standing on.
My standard method for these pesky trees is to fire ballista arrows at them. A hit will disintegrate the tree completely (no logs), leaving a trunk shaped hole in the water (or canopy shaped if that deep). These holes can trap creatures (they can't climb the water walls), but will collapse if waves are generated.
You may have to fire several arrows before hitting the tree, but on the other hand hitting any part of it (including twigs) will eliminate it. Arrows will also disintegrate several trees if they happen to be in the arrow's path.

The ballista worked! I built it at point-blank range, and an iron-tipped arrow destroyed two trees in one shot. Thanks for the tip!

You're welcome. And a wooden arrow works just as well. No need to waste iron on it.
