Author Topic: Made a mistake with my fortress design, what do I do from here?  (Read 731 times)

I was trying to make a magma pit only traverse-able by a drawbridge surround my fortress, but I made an unfortunate mistake.

I forgot my entrance hall which I intended to build crossbowdwarf fortifications for in case any uninvited guests crossed the pit was two z-levels below the fort's entrance, which is how far I intended to dig down for the pit, so when I was wondering why the pit looked so strange from the first z-level below the surface, I went down the second z-level only to find this:

What do I do from here? Is this irreparable so I have to abandon this fortress?

I'm not completely sure what your problem is, apart from a hole where you don't want one.

If the hole is the only problem you can either plug it with a solid block of walls (would have to be built gradually, of course, or you'd have missing parts (and possibly caught builders) further in. You can also build a floor to separate the top from the stuff below. Note that walls and floors are magma safe regardless of building material once built (such as ice, for instance), so the material is not important from a technical point of view.

I'm guessing the top half is the intended magma pit and the bottom half is the meeting hall(has a ceiling).

The issue you have is that the meeting hall is on the same level as the pit, which means your dwarfs can't walk through the magma to get to the hall.

I'd say just channel your ramp on the island down another level and build the hall down 1 level deeper.  You can then build a wall across the old meeting hall and pit and turn it into a storage room or something.  Since it is sand when you breach the caverns you could use it to house your animals or something too.

It might take some creative redesign of the section depending on the depths between levels.  This is one of the reason I personally do not build on adjacent z-levels.

If you cant use the below z-level, consider making an above ground building.  So 2 bridges over the magma and then a ramp into your meeting hall.

I know this is ridiculous, but seeing as how easy it is to gen a new embark I would probably abandon the fortress. I'm a bit perfectionist when it comes to the appearance of my fortress and a giant lump of empty space would bother me.

You can just wall it off, however.

Yeah, I'd build a wall along where you expected the edge of the magma pit to be. Then just build your meeting hall in a different configuration that you originally planned.

It might be irritating, but the only other option is to abandon.

Not the only other option. Can always relocate the rest of the fortress 1 level lower; should go faster than redoing it at least.

Or, if you're willing to DFHack it, use liquids (obsidian only) or tiletypes (harder to use) command then hide it with revflood.
