My Fort Just Went To Hell... Literally... [SPOILERS]
« on: June 26, 2016, 07:27:56 pm »

So there I was, gazing down upon the beginnings of Timelashed, a worthy settlement. I had high hopes for this fort, and it seemed to be going places. With a budding silver industry and some efficient farms, I was confident that my dwarves would last the first winter. Then the game paused, and informed me that part of the surface had collapsed. Odd? I un-paused the game and the entire screen went black with smoke and dust. Then the next alert showed up: "Horrifying screams can be heard from below!"

Now this really puzzled me, because the deepest my dwarves had dug was z-level 9.

When the dust settled, I found my fledgling fort in ruins. Half of my dwarves had been crushed brutally in the collapse, including all of the children. The others were trapped in little pockets underground, with no way to dig themselves out. My only remaining miner was trapped in the meeting hall with a severed spine and no movement below his legs, slowly bleeding out from a gash on his forehead. (In other words, useless..) There would be no way for him to save his fellows, who were slowly dying of thirst. To make matters worse, the demons of hell had somehow made it onto the surface and were happily dismembering the remaining survivors and livestock.

Timelashed had literally fallen into hell in seconds.

My question is this: What in the Age of Mysteries just happened?

The only thing that I know will cause spontaneous clown car opening is using reveal-hell in DFHack, then unpausing. If that's not it, then I got nothin'.

Even if you found a suitable opening, I doubt it would prove all too satisfying. And it might leave some nasty wounds, depending on the moral high ground's geology.
Location subject to periodic change.

´reveal demons´, you mean.

Otherwise, I can imagine fire FB in invisible caverns causing a tree to collapse through the thinnest adamantine spire. Alternatively, diagonal magma pool shearing with cavern water could also cause such a cave in, though it'd be bit more esoteric. For extreme elevation shears, sometimes magma pool will reveal and spill into hell.

However, none of those would cave in an entire existing fortress anchored to the map edge. The only fort-wide cavein possible that I know about would be caused by dwarven power mining, but that seems rather unlikely to happen, barring memory bugs.

'Openlegends' used to do this for some reason.

Your fortress just had a very literal Rapid Unplanned Disassembly.

(the only way I could think what happened is if your caverns are completely open, i.e., there's a disconnect between Z-levels that's just "open" and crashed through a candy spire. Still, I'm kinda at a loss ...)

Fucking hell man, you aren't just getting the short end of the stick, you're being beaten with it.

Is your plan really to flush water into hell, and have the CARP marines fight them without threat of flame or disease?  If so, you are awesome, and one of the greatest DF military visionaries I've seen yet ( not that I've seen that many, or any, for that matter )

As Shonai_Dweller said, using openlegends from DFHack and then returning and saving (at any later time) is said to be able to cause this. The save somehow gets corrupted and will crash the game in that way at a particular time. I think that bug has been partially(?) fixed, but the advice is to save first, do openlegends, and then kill DF without saving, restarting from the save before opening legends.

Hey, this seems like a rare and interesting occurrence indeed. Could you please upload the save so we can have a closer look?

Build a grid of floor grates above the entire city. Draft a squadron of masons and bomb the crap out of the city with falling constructed walls.

Sorry, the save is gone, I had a bit of a rage quit after and deleted it. I'm pretty sure it was the openlegends bug though, because I was playing around with legends a while back.

It must've been the "openlegends" bug. Happened to me too lately.
