Mass deaths
« on: October 19, 2007, 04:25:00 pm »

Every day or so i check this forum and find somehting about a fortress flooding, tantruming, slaughters and random deaths of dwarves.

Yet on the fortresses i have designed i have had very few of these, the worst was a acidental flooding of the world (editing the moat didnt know water spilled into all tiles)  and when i was explanding farming but moved ot another task, leaving aone wide tile where i forgot to place a door flooding half my fort. Strangely even with this No more than 13 or so dwarves had died, both of wich ocurances happened on the same fort.

am i lucky or is it that running forts for  2-3 years the abondoning is making mass deaths unlikely?

Then you are either very skilled, very lucky, or very unlucky for missing the best part of the game; losing is fun!  :D

I find that if I can hold it togeather for the first year and a half things will be ok.  Things usually start to get a bit more savage later on when you have 6 wounded dwarves and a few more who are a bit unhappy about something,  Bridge gets smashed by tantrumer, wounded go bezerk, gobs turn up, more deaths = more unhappy dwarves = tantrums.  Next thing you know the sherrif and hammerer are handing out beatdowns and jail time like its going out of fashion.  Watching the social breakdown is probably the most and least fun thing about this game.
You have done VERY well to hold it togeather like that, I lost about 8 fortesses just learning the basics.
The only comment I will make is that after the first 3 years you probably still havnt seen a goblin seige, been attacked by 50 ratmen, dealt with the bastard nobles and trapped yourself a few Gorillas.
These things are all great fun the only reason not to play on is the economy which is a damn pain (build 100 stacks of coins and lock them up seems to work).
Once you have farming worked out basic survival is easy after the first winter.  For me it is the big crazy projects that you start to need later that really make the game. (Im tired of dealing with goblins, what I really need is 50 elephants at the front gate, How many elves do I have to teach to swim before they get the message?  You know what I need? giant tombs, lots of them!  Make 150 steel axes and assign everyone to woodcutting? Great Idea.)

Properly set up, deaths are very very rare. The only deaths I ever have anymore are the occasional death from fey moods (can't do anything when they want gems you just don't have) fire imp ambushes (though with sacrificial chained dogs near the magma these have been mostly stopped) or nobles having a dwarf beaten/hammered (cages as jails stop hammerings, beatings seem to be very rare if you have enough cells).

I too wonder about forts with mass dwarf deaths. Even goblin sieges are just an annoyance rather then a threat. it seems to me once you have the basics down there is no reason to have mass dwarf deaths unless you are trying out weird new things or purposely making a poorly designed fort to make it harder.

If you get through goblin seiges woundless its usually not a problem, its having slightly wounded but seriously armed dwarves going bezerk that does the damage, Normally in the main barracks that is full of sleeping dwarves, Elf raids can be nasty if you are not careful.

Another thing that I have had cause mass deaths is setting all unarmed dwarves to woodcutting and thrashing up a pile of quality iron axes.
An armed society is a polite society as long as everybody plays by the  rules, when they dont it arms and legs flapping about on the floor all over the place.
The combination of rag clothes, no bedroom, a few clouds of miasma and the death then rotting of a pet/spouse can be enough to set haulers off.

Setting up a "social laboratory" fort can be fun to (evil fun is still fun, we all slaughter kittens on a regular basis), ventilated refuse stockpiles near main corridors, no nobles rooms, stranding dwarves in hermetiges or lockable rooms (have my miner beaten! over this drawbridge to learn the nutritional value of a good cockroach Mr Mayor).

Is this link legal to post here...? If not, sorry bout the rule breaking ...

But I somehow find this relevant to this topic :P I can totally picture a few elephants take on an unsuspecting fortress of a few hundred dwarves with the same outcome as this video....

Thousands of Bees vs a few Hornets

After only a few hours, a few (50? 100?) hornets wipe out an entire colony of bees. On the ground, bee-heads and bodies are spread out all over the place. "It's not even a fight. It's a massacre."

Can't view that from work, but it sounds very much like a video I saw a while back (on Youtube I think) of something in the region of 6 Giant Hornets vs. 600 bees.  The bees didn't stand a chance...

Must have been European bees. African bees can usually fend them off, or so I've heard. There are probably other differences, too, like airspeed velocity...

Air-speed velocity?  Do you mean a laden or unladen bee?

I don't tend to have many problems with my forts until clothing starts to rot off.  There's absolutely nothing you can do about it in this version, and once they all start getting those bad thoughts, if I don't catch them in time and try to improve their bedrooms and dining room, I have mass tantrums and then mass starvation (too busy tantruming to grow food) and then mass hunting for small creature and then more mass tantrums and then mass death.

Have you considered making more clothing?

Granted, it doesn't take long before you have prima donna fashion designers going berserk from art defacement, but I've always thought that an appropriate reflection of the real - or at least Hollywood - world.

When they put on new clothing, they do not take off their old clothing - they just layer it.  They wear it until it rots off, which makes them miserable.  Then, if you do give them new clothing, there's no way to tell them to take it off when it starts rotting, so they freak out all over again.

Indeed, making more clothes just makes the problem last forever. Dwarves will wear something like 5 pairs of pants, so if you make enough and they all layer on 5 pairs (which they will) then chances are one is constantly going to be rotten giving them the sad though. as soon as it rots off, they grab another pair to replace it.

I have seen them take off worn clothes and store them in a cabinet before, but they don't always and I don't know why. furthermore clothes take forever to decay completely so even if they did take them off right you would have to have 10 cabinets per dwarf to hold them all to prevent clutter.

I just don't make clothes. Once you get over the initial rot cycle, no more problems! I don't know if the dwarves don't care about being naked bug is fixed in the next version or not.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Dwarves not caring about being naked was set up specifically because of the bug with handling clothes, so unless that has been fixed I would guess that they feel the same about nakedness as they do now.
