How would you go about making rock-eating dwarves?
« on: October 18, 2007, 11:28:00 am »

I think it'd be fun to make a game in which certain kinds of rock were edible to dwarves. I'd like to make certain stones millable and then the milled stone 'flour' cookable. Any suggestions?

Stone has no nutritional value. Clay and some other minerals are needed by people, however, and many vitamin and other suppliment pills have clay in them.

There's no way as far as I know to make stone editable via modding the game, if that's what you're asking. Stone and plants are both completely seperate item types and that's hardcoded.

Now, if Toady made it so every item in the game uses a single base item template and has tokens changing its item type.. ah, but a man can dream!

I don't think it's possible to mod dwarves to eat rocks, or to mod rocks to be milled into rock flour.  You could add a new food and call it rocks (or whatever you like) and make that millable into rock flour but you would have to grow it (or make it drop from an animal). Or you could just pretend quarry bushes are literally rocks and uhm.. they come from your rock garden. It's too bad really becase eating them would be an excellent way to clean up the clutter in a fortress.

if you wanna get rid of rocks, create rock stockpiles by the river all the way on the bottom of the map. each flood will remove a few.  Also, make a ballista firing at a wall across the chasm, bye bye rocks!

Sometimes people do get cravings for weird non-food items with pregnancy or blood disorders.  Makes sense that a pregnant or berserk dwarf would want to munch on a tasty moonstone.   :D  Dwarven pica!

Catapult not Ballista
Very important distinction.

In the next version you can just dump all the stone into one square and be done with it. Very useful.

Read the replies before dissing the repliers.
It's not possible in this version, even you said that, right after dissing people for saying it and continuing the thread of conversation.

True of course, but the roman Balitstae often chucked small stones. They were torsion powered however, not spring.

Imagine setting up a big net on the other side of a chasm and throwing stone and goods across with a catapult. Who needs mule carts! Just helmets.  :D

Idea:

Sweet pod -> Dwarven sugar -> Dwarven Rock Candy

Knowing dwarves, it would be closer to a jaw breaker  :p

For some reason, I never catch the really neat stuff about the next version(s), like this treat.  Wow.  I kinda don't believe it.

But, along the thread topic, I always thought that quarry bushes were awfully rock-like, but it could just be an average bush thing that grows in a quarry instead of a bush that is otherwise similar to a quarry.  Yeah, I thought quarry bushes were that cool.
