Visitors carry items made out of Spoiler-y materials?
« on: June 18, 2016, 01:36:45 pm »

Spoilers, obviously.

It's a fairly frequent occurance in most worlds I generate for visitors to arrive with scrolls, codices, or instruments made partly from forgotten beast hide or silk. That seems normal enough, since FBs do stuff in worldgen. However, I just a human bard arrived carrying a compassionately-written guide to a nearby hillocks - on a scroll made out of "earwig devil" parchment. Another human bard has a stringed instrument whose strings are made from dancing wisps.

How are they getting those materials?

If it makes a difference, it's a large world with a somewhat long (current year is 473) history.

Well demons can come out under certain circumstances and take control of civs, so the parchment made of demon hide is not impossible (though probably rare as hell).

How they got their hands on angel stuff is beyond me, though. Last I remmeber NPCs were not supposed to break into vaults, so they should never even see angels. (or was that only for kobolds?)

Has that ever happened before?

Scrolls and books are made from a random material - any material that can be made into a book or scroll can show up in worldgen. The dancing wisps in a stringed instrument is because if a civ doesn't have access to silk, but has instruments that call for it, the instruments will have a random kind of silk. Divine cloth is silk.

So if a forgotten beast or spoiler is killed in the world's history, will it's hide be counted as an item in the game and then used? What about other creatures? Does the game track records of individual sheep's killed and parchments are made from those? If so, hats off.

It doesn't.

Anything made during Worldgen is made of randomly selected materials, usually selected from a list of materials the relevant civ has access to, though if they have no relevant materials then it selects from all possible materials. The materials don't actually come from anywhere, they just appear in the finished form.

So a Sheep Leather Boot was never actually a Sheep in Worldgen, the game just needed a boot and selected from a list of materials randomly.

The dancing wisps in a stringed instrument is because if a civ doesn't have access to silk, but has instruments that call for it, the instruments will have a random kind of silk. Divine cloth is silk.

So if all varieties of spider are removed from the raws and a new world is generated, does that mean that all stringed instruments would have divine fabric strings?

You could still get forgotten beast silk and stuff like that.

According to the wiki, strings can be made from silk, plant thread, or adamantine strands. Even if your entire world is a spiderless glacier, visitors will probably still bring 'normal' instruments.
