Ahh, well, that's why you put your traps not only outdoors, but out of line of sight of the transition from indoors to outdoors of your fort. That way dwarves that head outside will realize that they should be back indoors before getting shot or seeing a goblin and running in terror to the other end of the map.

And rig some chokepoints if you can manage it.

This is why I love building forts in the middle of a river valley; set up traps at either end of the valley and see SIEGE! followed by an intense grinding sound as your serrated discs kick into overtime, and the last couple goblins running screaming about the very ground mincing the army.

How the hell do stonefall traps work in the middle of nowhere? Where the hell does it fall from?

Walls, a moat, a main keep and in between traps. In total, traps and army not included, I have 4 lines of defence:

  • a big wall with a gate building and a tower on each corner: Two walls right next to each other, a walkway of two wide and another wall on the ground floor and the same on the first level except the last wall. Right next to the gate building, that is 15 levels high, the main barracks are situated for fast access in case of an enemy attack. These are two high and have barracks on the lower level and a practice range on the upper level;

  • a moat, five wide and five deep. The lowest three levels can be flooded at will. The moat is crossed with a retractable bridge;

  • a basic wall, 1 wide, with three fortifications on either side of the only entrance. In front of those fortifications are floodgates to repel enemy fire;

  • the keep, whereof the walls of z=0 and z+1 are made according to the same plan as the basic wall. This building is made on top of the main entrance in order to repel flying attackers. The ground floor is used for trading and producing above-ground crops (mainly sun berries for sunshine);

  • a 1-wide hallway filled with traps (stone-fall or weapon, since this the ultimate line of defence before drafting civilians as wrestlers) that can be sealed and flooded at any time. This drains into the moat, which -obviously- can also be drained and accessed in order to salvage the goodies;

  • the army 1/4 (Fortress Guard not included) of my population;

  • and the obvious traps (mostly cage-traps to fuel the arena).

Elaborate? Yes. Safe? Most likely. Necessary? Maybe not.

That moat seems kind of overly large. Why so wide?

Why not? It might not be practical but it's aesthetically pleasing. And that's what I aim for, a good-looking fortress.

Yeah, gotta agree with the good looks. I personally would have chose a drawbridge (slightly too large), but that's because I like the idea of Gobbos riding up to the moat and then >SLAM!< Goblin juice for everyone!

I'm picturing a door out in the middle of a field, with "Enter Here" written on it and a large rock precariously balanced on the top.

Who  says the stones have to fall on the goblins?   Maybe it's set up so that if you walk on the wrong stone, it shifts and (along with you) rolls, thus falling into the cleaverly conceiled pit it was just barely angled to not fall in  to right away.  Add in you falling in with it, and likely getting one or more appendages wedged in between the boulder and the wall due to how the boulder tilted 90 degrees as it fell in with you on top, and the small landslide onto you of the vairious rocks and other debries used to help hude the hole, and... ouch!
