I've broken my wool industry, help please?
« on: June 18, 2016, 07:31:11 am »

So I don't know what I've done but wool won't work.  My spinner will spin no problem but he produces nothing.  He's spinning sheep, llama, and alpaca wool but no thread (yarn) gets produced.

I'm using version 0.42.06 with the LazyNewbPack (dfhack on).  I know that it *was* working at one point, but I've been generating world after world and every embark has this issue.  I redownloaded the pack and the problem persists.

I've done numerous searches but it seems as though this is not an issue with the game so I assume it must be something I'm doing.

My setup is such that I have a stockpile for pigtails+quarry bushes, and a seperate stockpile for hair (I set it to only sheep, llama, and alpaca hair to see if that would help but it hasn't).  I have stockflow enabled on the hair stockpile so spinning happens no problem.  I have no stockpile for thread and no stockpile for cloth.  I have autoloom on but set to loom only dyed thread.  I also have my dyer set to continually unsuspend the dye thread job so there's constantly weavable thread being produced (but only pigtail thread).

If I look in stocks, sure enough there is no yarn.

I've also tried bringing the animals on embark, or purchasing them from a trader, and it's the same result.

Any ideas?

Savefile of my fort: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=12158
(first time uploading a savefile so hopefully I did it right)

I was thinking that it might have something to do with the fact the hair is all "Stray" Ewe/Ram/Llama/Alpaca Hair?  But again, I don't know what happened because I'm fairly certain a few weeks ago I was making wool no problem... not 100% on that though, I'm still quite new to DF and I rarely get more than a few years into a fort before abandoning and starting over :P

I'm not particularly familiar with a wool industry, but I just tried this in 43.03.

I embarked with 5 female alpaca's and one male alpaca.  Upon embarking, I enabled the farming related labours, built a loom and a farmer's workshop.

Immediately I noticed 6 of these in the Farmer's Workshop: (using 't' to look at the workshop)
stray alpaca wool [7]
stray alpaca wool [7]
stray alpaca wool [7]
stray alpaca wool [7]
stray alpaca wool [7]
stray alpaca wool [7]
(in dark yellow/brown, not bright yellow color, but brown on these forums has been broken/red forever)

In any case, I setup a stockpile for cloth, the wool was not put there.
I setup a stockpile for refuse hair/wool, the wool was put there.

I created a job on the loom to 'y' [Weave Cloth (Wool/Hair/Yarn)] and it just fails/cancels with: "Needs 1 unused collected yarn thread".

When attempting to create a 's' [Shear Animal] job at the Farmer's Workshop, it fails/cancels with: "No creature" when clearly... I have 6 alpacas I've never sheared at this point, unless shearing is automatic, and it happened immediately without me telling them to do that, and took no time?

EDIT:
Ok, it's a Spin thread into yarn job at the farmer's workshop.. (not weave at loom) and it uses the wool, and produces alpaca wool yarn in the cloth stockpile.
After that, a 'y' [Weave Cloth (Wool/Hair/Yarn)] job at the loom worked fine, and produced alpaca wool cloth
I then built a clothier workshop, created a job to make a yarn bag, and it produced an alpaca wool bag, as expected.
Seems to be working ok?

Thank-you for the response :)

When I spin I produce absolutely no yarn, although the spinner will go with no job cancellations...

If I 'look' at my farmer's workshop doing the spinning (k is look for me, l is for locations) there's nothing there...

I now have a level 18 spinner (was level 0 when he started) but have produced zero yarn/wool.

If I buy the yarn, it gets made into wool cloth, but any spinning produces nothing...

Is it possible that my spinner can be getting levels but not consuming any hair?  I have a BOATload of hair now (looks like close to 1000 all-together of ewe/ram/llama/alpaca), and that seems odd considering he is constantly spinning.

Use 't' to look at the shop and see if you see the wool there on the 'floor' of the workshop.

Is your plan really to flush water into hell, and have the CARP marines fight them without threat of flame or disease?  If so, you are awesome, and one of the greatest DF military visionaries I've seen yet ( not that I've seen that many, or any, for that matter )

Oh thankyou I completely misread your first post.

There's no yarn in the shop, but what is interesting is I noticed there's 'giant hedgehog hair' being spun... hrmm.

I think this single strand of giant hedgehog hair has been being spun continually for the entire lifespan of my fort so far...

I forbade it and told my refuse (all the non-weave-able hair) stockpile to be given only to my butcher's shop.

Spinner grabs alpaca hair (I used t to check, thankyou for that, sometimes I do need to be told twice), and although he appears to spin it, no yarn is produced, neither does the stack of hair get consumed.

Maybe this is a known bug after all, because I did see in the bug tracker there were a few reports of spinning hair only producing 1 thread or something?

What I think I'm seeing is that my stack of 7 alpaca hairs, after being spun became a stack of 6 hairs, and then that stack of 6 just continually gets spun but stays at 6.  And at no point do I get any yarn...

Edit: sorry I kept saying hair, obviously I meant wool.

NCommander, I have a link to the save in my first post.  It's my first upload though so I might have done it wrong.

You are aware that hair from butchered animals will also be spun. It's resultant product is a thread but its only use is for suturing. It cannot be stockpiled. Excess can be dumped.

Yarn from wool (which is also refuse) will be spun into yarn and used for making wool cloth.

The wool doesn't seem to be getting destroyed and lost, but rather the spinning job just isn't consuming any of the wool.  I forbade all of your wool except for one stack of 6 alpaca wool, and the stack remains at 6 no matter how many times the job executes.

Turning off workflow, cancelling all of the workshop jobs, and then re-instating the Spin Thread job fixed the problem.  Wool is now being consumed and thread is appearing.

Hmm okay thank-you, I still don't understand what happened though... and as I said it's been happening extremely consistently.  Is it maybe because the spinner grabs non-wool hair first and all subsequent spinning jobs simply fizzled out?

In all my previous forts i simply had all the hair in a single stockpile, not separating wool hair from non-wool.  I guess I'll try a few more things and see what works.. it's been so painful though getting a year or two into a fort and then having this happen and pretty much giving up and starting again :\

I just want to be able to make human-size clothes out of one type of cloth, and dwarf-size clothes out of another, and having wool seemed like the best way to do that.

Thank-you for trying my save and letting me know that it is possible to get it working, I appreciate the legwork :)

My guess is that it is a workflow bug, since disabling workflow is what resolves it.  I use the same LNP but never use workflow, and I have no problem with wool.  Hair gets spun and wool gets spun and there's never an issue.

Workflow and not stockflow?  Workflow wasn't handling wool/hair in any way shape or form... weird.

All I turned off was workflow, but I don't use either of them so it could be either.
