Retractable Bridge defence.

Another question for you knowledgeable types.

Assume you have the following setup

code:

######BBBBBBBBB#####
######.........#####
   HH    P    HH
   HH    P    HH
######.........#####
######         #####
####################

# Wall     H Hatch           . Open Space
Floor    P Pressure Plate  B Retracted Retracting Bridge

When the Pressure plates are stepped on the following should occur.

code:

######BBBBBBBBB#####
######BBBBBBBBB#####
   ..BBBBBBBBB..
   ..BBBBBBBBB..
######BBBBBBBBB#####
######BBBBBBBBB#####
####################

# Wall     H Hatch           . Open Space
Floor    P Pressure Plate  B UNRetracted Retracting Bridge

So triggering either of the pressure plates should open the hatches and extend the bridge pushing anyone off the middle and into the pit at one side. It would be reset afterwards by a lever. Is this how retractable bridges work? Or would it infact slam down like a raising (draw) bridge? Would the bridge also trigger the pressure plates underneath it all the time making it impossible to retract?

Retractable bridges disappear completely when retracted.  They leave behind no sign of there being a bridge when they are retracted.  They have no effect on items or people whatsoever, unless you're dropping them by retracting the bridge while they're standing on it.

Also, you can't place pressure plates (or anything else, for that matter) in an area where a bridge, retracting or otherwise, will cover.

Ahha! thank you for the clarification. I was loathe to try it on my fortress because I refuse to save scum and thought it better to ask about first.

Cheers again

Ah, don't give up hope yet! Pressure plates, levers, and just about all mechanisms have a slight delay to functioning. While you may not be able to put the bridge exactly on the pressure plate, you can put it right in front of the pressure plate. This can arrange goblins and other invaders for squishing and/or flinging.

EDIT: this only works with bridges that raise in one direction, though. Not retractable bridges from what I have heard.
