Will a captured necromancer write books?
« on: May 31, 2016, 04:01:22 pm »

My embark has 4x Tower neighbors.

One wave of undead siege had 3 necromancers that ran away.

Another wave of undead siege, the necromancer was caught in my cage traps.

I am thinking of creating a housing for this prisoner with air lock to a library.

Will a captured necromancer write books?

I assume, I make it a library that is not pathable to my fortress.

Will I just need to leave piles of sheets, codixes, bookcase, chest, throne and table?

I think manually forbidding doors, I can put a cage trap to an exit for recapture when I need to resupply the library with sheets, and move written materials.

Well, he's a hostile invader so I don't think he'll do much outside of wander around waiting for something to kill/reanimate

Will a captured necromancer write books?
I'm pretty sure they only do that during worldgen...

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Robbing a book off him (strip him from the cage ideally) and disposing of him personally should be enough, dwarves will hopefully come by and read it in their own time if its not made out of disgusting sentient parts (from memory that violates their overall sensitivity to read from books made out of sentient beings)

The first necromancer (dwarf) had no book on him.  He is placed in a room with 3 gem windows, 3 fortification, and 1x5 wide raising bridge shutter over looking an arena under construction.  The 2 libraries above this room do not yet have stuff in the coffers.

Do I need to assign a scholar first to have my haulers put sheets and codices in the library?

--

Then, I got a siege with 6 mixed humans and elves, I shut the bridges except for one though the depot.  And lo and behold, I captured 4 sneaking necros within a 3x3 group of cage traps.  I have not stripped them of stuff yet.  Maybe one of them is carrying a book.

I am assuming I just captured necros from 2 of 4 Towers neighbors.
I did capture 5 of 6 Human siege, since we're at war with the human neighbor.

Quires and codices are moved normally to the library (although unwritten quires are stuck in an endless loop of hauling between stockpile and library, if you have a stockpile). However, book carried by killed enemies (such as vampires posing as entertainers) are frequently marked as "merchant" owned and won't be moved (unless DFHack is used to remove the merchant setting). They're also invisibly marked as forbidden when dropped, and can't be dumped.

Hmm, would books (of captured necromancers) show up in the z stocks screen?

I did not see anything listed when I last checked.

I'll carefully check when I do the cage stripping on the newly captured necros next time.
