Adamantite pillar issue
« on: May 29, 2016, 02:48:07 pm »

So my dwarves have been mining out a few z levels of the adamantite pillar and i noticed after a while that a dwarf trapped himself in the lowest level and either fell or starved to death. The problem now is the whole area is surrounded by magma and molten rock. so the only acess is from above, but the dwarves are suspending the construction of up stairs on that level because of all the rocks in the way down there im assuming. any clever ideas on how to recover my miners body and continue downward on the pillar?

If you're worried about him haunting you then memorialise him in a slab and recover his body at your leisure. Usually dwarves will move rocks out of the way (if they have space to). Why would rocks stop you from building a construction in empty space?

If your problem is that you've got a single tile hole with stuff (such as a body and/or a bunch of rocks) at the bottom, you can't build a stair there until you've removed the blocking items. There are a few ways to do that, assuming you can't just path there:
- Dig a stair at the tile beside the one you want to access. You can then use that to remove the blockage (including the body), and then build a stair. This requires the presence of rock safe/possible to mine, of course (not SMR, and not magma pouring in as you dig).
- Obsidianize magma outside the new prospective stair (the point above), and then dig the new stair.
- Dump 1/7 magma into the hole and wait for it to evaporate. Only works if the miner didn't have any magma safe metal items (such as a steel pick), and none of the rocks are magma safe. You can then build a stair after the magma has dissolved everything and evaporated.
- Dump water into the hole and then obsidianize it by topping up with magma (with a one level drop, or you'll most likely just get steam instead of obsidian). Dig a stair in the obsidian. That ought to allow you to recover the body as well as the rocks (although I've never actually verified myself that the body and items are recoverable).

thanks patrik, sounds like obsidianizing is the only way to continue harvesting my pillar. so i should set the pit 2 levels above the lowest chamber for it to work?

The ledge from which you dump water ought to have (at least) one level of free fall before the magma, otherwise you're getting steam rather than obsidian most of the time.
I usually obsidianize an inverted pyramid around my pillars for safe harvesting. The top level should cover an area such that decreasing the area one step per level down would still leave you with at least one tile of obsidian outside of the outermost candy outcropping.
I generally engineer a water flow with drawbridges to block the water from an infinite water source (I usually have an aquifer, but a river or edge connected (cavern) lake would work as well, although those require a bit more safety feature to keep hostiles out). Flowing water does not have the fall restriction dumped water has, for some reason.

(although I've never actually verified myself that the body and items are recoverable).

They seem to be. I am slowly discovering all the Dorfs that "went missing" as I excavate the obsidian. I currently try to get the magma tubes empty to settle there, some fun was had.

I don't care. I have discovered that if you spawn elves this way, cats will chase them down and eat them.
