What settings for the region should i use?
« on: April 06, 2008, 02:27:00 pm »

I am going to china because of my work, and only have a 1,7 ghz single core notebook. Is this enough for a 5x5 region?

Does Dwarf Fortress even support dual core?

Dwarf Fortress is singlethreaded only.

I suspect your biggest problem is going to be one of interface, since the game currently requires use of the numeric keypad. You can remap keys, but it'll make the interface different and probably harder to use.

As for settings, just keep chopping size, dwarves, and features off until you find something that you think is playable.

i keep a targus USB external numeric keypad with my laptop at all times, just to play roguelike games.  theyre pretty cheap and small, and they are available in lots of brands from almost any computer/electronics store.

my laptop is a 2GHZ and it doesnt have any problems playing in 3x5 or 4x4 areas with medium height clifs and lots of Z levels.  lately i've been confineing myself to 3x3 or even 2x2 to speed up the game, but thats more because i've been trying to get my forts more compact and reduce my scrolling time when i'm hunting for items or buildings or something on the map, and also to speed up caravans and invaders and things.  gameplay is just paced a little more aggressively on the small maps, i think.

i dont think you'd have any trouble in a 5x5 as long as it was relatively flat and you didnt go too crazy digging out every z level down to -15 while simultaniously balooning to a population of 200 or something.

I think i will just buy a cheap keyboard in china... Cant be that expensive. The biggest problem will be about finding a good region small enough with adamantine, magma, a river, iron ore and flux without aquifers...

you can import flux and iron and steel from most dwarf civs.  the trick i usually have a hard time with is bauxite, it seems to be less than 50% chance of import, and i never seem to find it on the map.

I kind of like having an aquifir if I dont have a river.

I've got one that fills all the criteria and it's about 4x4.  Has sand too.

257x257, seed is 1092158648.

I've got it extended a few bits east since I wanted the extra soil just in case.  You may want to extend it one bit south to get a slightly longer cave river, since my initial reveal seemed to show that it was about 8 units out of the southern border of the map.

Anyway, soil layer is yellow sand, a good portion of the rock is either Dolomite or Marble, and Iron is everywhere in the form of Limonite, Hematite and Magnetite.
