No seeds available for this location
« on: April 06, 2008, 02:15:00 am »

Both of my Farm Plots began displaying the message "No seeds available for this location" a few minutes ago.  I have no idea why.  Both Farm Plots have individualized Food Stockpiles a single square away.  Each of these Food Stockpiles only stores Seeds.  Moreover, I have at least a dozen Barrels full of Plump Helmet Spawn between the two Food Stockpiles.  How do I get my Farm Plots back in action and my crops growing again?  What have I overlooked?

Do you talk about irrigsted farms?
Then maybe the layer of mud on the cavern floor has become too thin to support any seeds and the farm has to be reflooded.

Or maybe you accidentally told the farm to plant something other than plump helmet (something of which you donīt have any seeds available). This would be something I would especially suspect if you got this message shortly after the season changed. (The farms remember their settings, so if for example you ordered them to plant cave weed in spring you can be sure that next year in spring they will again try to plant cave weed on this plot)

I may have answered my own question.  I read a few posts on this forum that claim Farm Plots actually need to be irrigated periodically from a water source.  Hopefully this will work.  Another chance to use my Floodgates.

It depends on the type of farm plot.

If you dig one z-level below the surface and dig underneat surface patches that have soil (i.e. loam, sand and the like) then the cavern floor will consist of soil as well. Farm plots built on such a cavern floor dnīt have to be irrigated but can consistently be farmed like farms on the outide. (although you might want to fertilize them from time to time to keep production rates up).

If however you build farms on non soil cavern floor (i.e. any types of rock) that just get frtile soil by flooding then yes, they have to be irrigated once a year.

Aye, I built my Farm Plot in a hollowed out cavern of Slate.  After I irrigated the Farm Plot my crops began rotating again.  Now I just need to figure out why I cannot build a Bridge across the Chasm...

Incidentally, stone farmplots only need to be irrigated once; once they're muddy, they stay muddy for the rest of time.

Yup. The thing about them having to be irrigated annually was from the old 2D version, and to my knowledge it has never been put into the 3D version.

I disagree,
the last time when I had to build irrigated farms (which as around the end of 2007, maybe December) the mud on the cavern floor would vanish after a year.
The farm plots of course themselves wouldnīt vanish, but in this state they wouldnīt accept any seeds until I had reirrigated the rooms.

The mud not vanishing was an added feature in one of the more recent releases:
12/17/2007
# Stopped automatic removal of mud in winter.

Before that you did need to reflood. Afterwards there was no point.
