It's the little things
« on: October 04, 2007, 01:22:00 am »

So earlier, I was watching my dwarves launch chunks of rocks at some pesky humans, when I noticed that the rocks would break ice that it landed on and fall into the water. I hadn't noticed that previously, and it was just a little detail that made flinging chunks of talc and rhyolite that much more enjoyable.

What little things have happened or surprised you while playing that surprised you with their accuracy or unexpectedness?

If an enemy is killed by a blunt weapon or an axe, their corpse will sometimes fly an extremely far distance away from the Dwarf who kills them (8-9 tiles).

If an enemy is struck by a sword or axe, when it lops off a limp the limb in question will actually fly away for 4-5 tiles in a random direction, followed by a trail of blood.

Both very cool "Woah!" moments when they first happened.

Engravings related to specific events in the history of the fortress.  I just love browsing them.   :D

I like seeing all the little things the dwarves buy/horde in their rooms and tombs when the economy is enabled.  I also love capturing animals and training them up. the idea of a tame hippo or gorilla roaming around my fort amuses me for some reason.

Now if you could only get them to breed together.  Monkopotamus for the win.

Imagine the unspeakable horror if you could breed an elephant and a hippo.

Jaws of doom coupled with legs of doom? Yeah, that's not going to be pretty.

But I always did wonder what happens when you shoot a catapult at ice. That's some nice little detail.

But anyway, back on topic. What caught me unaware was the ability of propelled corpses to affect people in their way. This surprised me when one of my champions was running around outside spanking kobolds with a hammer. One unlucky kobold found a hammer right in its face and was sent flying like a home run towards my entrance hall, where the flying soon-to-be corpse slammed right into some poor miner, who got stunned and knocked flat on his ass. No injuries. What I wonder is if injuries could potentially come of this!

Yes, the combat is great! I played Fortress Mode for awhile first, but when I went to Adventure Mode for the first time, I was amazed by the detail and limbs flying everywhere. It's like a movie, only better because you can imagine your character pulling off these incredible moves. It is very satisfying to pound a zombie in the chest, smash it in, and send him flying into a pillar of the old ruin. Follow it up with flinging a big rock at the next one as he lunges at you.

I also like the ability to make moats. I hadn't thought of that until I saw other's maps on the Map Archive.

i got used to picking berry bushes in fortress mode, then decided to try adventure mode for the first time.  there were lots of bushes around and i thought "huh, free food" and tried to pick them.  when i managed to survive the small blaze i had caused it looked like such a cool thing that i spent the better part of an hour setting fire to the foliage around a nearby village.  i think i eventually was overcome and died, but hey, that's part of the fun   :p

I remember that I was very suprised to see a failed lizard men attack turn the river red. It's still very fun seeing this.

One of my favourites was when I discovered you could look up and down in Adventure Mode with the <and> keys.  Especially useful when sniping off zombies on higher tiers at pyramid ruins, and when getting ready to go down stairs.

Another particularly memorable moment for me is when I discovered the Flingify() effect.

Ignore my previous post.  What really made me first say "this is a really cool game" is when I found out that dwarves appreciated well-made stuff, especially when they like the object or material type.  That's just such a perfect combination:  Making beautiful things and making dwarves happy.

Something I just noticed on my recent adventurer who was a good maceman. Was good, killed many ettins, cyclops, and other evils... then got taken out by a single arrow from a damn kobold. sigh.

But anyway, when he got stronger, I started seeing "Is propelled by the force of the blow!" "Slams into an obstacle and blows apart!"

And when they blow apart... it really means it. Limbs and chunks actually fly out several directions from the impact area. Messy but awesome. I would imagine this is possible in dwarf mode, as long as the appropriate conditions are available and the dwarf is strong enough.

I like how all the gaurds of towns have the image of their nation on thier cloaks or helms, like military uniforms.
