Flashing tiles on surface and unknown rocks
« on: May 27, 2016, 09:40:27 am »

Okay, I've tried the wiki, I've tried the forums, and I'm pretty au fait with the release notes, but for the life of me I can't understand a couple of things that are going on in my fort - just wanted to check if they're intended or bugs (which I'll report)

First up - a large amount of the rock around my starting location is of two previously unknown rocks/materials - they are "pock-marked metal" and "translucent stone".  Are these names for rocks that for some reason my civilisation doesn't know about? And if they are - how do I go about learning them?

Second up - and possibly releated, there are a number of squares on the surface that seem to be flashing/cycling through a large number of icons/colours, and trying to 'k' them give a rapidly cycling list of names.

Any help greatly appreciated?

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

The things with weird names are divine materials, I don't think they should just be lying around like that. The spaces with changing description/symbol sound even weirder! I'm thinking your game might be bugged up pretty bad.

Just genned a new world with standard parameters and got the same result. This was a fresh install of DF, with just a few standard changes to the inits and my usual mod of making lead ammo.

I'll re-download and see what happens!

Sounds like you messed up the raws for stone and/or soil layers. Have you added, removed or accidentally duplicated any of them?

Your raws are corrupted or missing - rapid-cycle material tiles are caused when your embark region contains no geology layers of the appropriate type (whether Stone or Soil) and it instead chooses a random material each frame (to make it very obvious that something has gone horribly wrong).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

That's good to know.  But wouldn't it be easier to write something in the error log?
