Friendly Military Dwarves
« on: April 05, 2008, 03:03:00 pm »

Here is 2 pages of the announcements in my fortress.

(Page 3 is repeated 3 times with different names.)
My guards are Legendary Wrestlers (whom also are friends with the entire fortress)

These military dwarves have been elected mayor 3 times in a row, over the guy whose bedroom/office/dining room doubles as the meeting place for the fortress and he has no duties so is just sitting there 'making friends'

So these military dwarves/guards each have 3 or so pages of friends.

Pisses me off.

Oh well, 113 was too many population anyway. My guards are proceeding to beat the living crap out of any dwarf who tantrums too much, cutting that thread of insanity. I expect to have lost 20 when all is said and done, unless another military dwarf or guard is killed... I wish my guards wouldn't make so many damn friends! My guards actually stand around in the Meeting hall rather then patrolling. Lazy oafs!

Yeah, I'm getting this problem now. Goblins sieged my fort and managed to kill about 10 dwarves (out of 150 or so) before my champion caught up and slaughtered them singlehandedly. Now everyone in my fortress has gone insane and started murdering people and making stuff from their corpses. The ENTIRE FORTRESS. Except for my champion, who's too awesome for that shit.

It's ridiculous. Are you just not supposed to lose anyone due to attacks? 'Cause this looks like it's gonna end my fortress.

EDIT: Oh wow, down 20 dwarves now. Melancholy, madness, and random berserk dwarves have proven to be far more deadly than the 20 goblin bowmen were. Everyone is too busy tantruming to clean up the rivers of blood, or even eat for Armok's sake. Damn.

Welcome to the downward spiral. This is presumably not desirable behavior and will probably get modified at some point, but in the meantime your best bet is to just keep everyone happy enough that they don't care when a friend bites it. Generally speaking, that means nice bedrooms (if the dwarves can afford them) and legendary dining halls.

There's also this; but there is also the fact that all reclaiming dwarves are polyamorus and as soon as 3 dwarves get killed, bam! everybody tantrum!

That's not how that word is spelled, and that's not what it means.

They're just good friends. With... everyone.

So I abandoned my fort and came back to reclaim it. A couple of the dwarves died to random ambushes... and then the whole problem starts over again. Crazy axedwarves going berserk everywhere. Went from 70 dwarves to 50 in a matter of a couple minutes. Now it's getting stupid.

Time to just start a new fort, I guess.

Add [NOTHOUGHT] to dwarves in the raws, then reclaim.  Wait 'til things have settled down (resident monsters slain, food industry stable, etc), then remove the token.  You should be back in business.

I only have had this problem one time, before I knew how to make the dwarves happy... do you have statues and engravings and high quality thrones and such in the dining room?  traps with better than normal quality mechanisms (they admire a totally sublime trap!)

Statue gardens? zoos?  Shopping centers?

I have lost 15 or so dwarves out of 160 and they become happy rather than ecstatic, which nearly everyone is otherwise--even the nobles when I kill their insignificant significant others.

In my current fortress, the worst I have had was a marksdwarf that lost a few friends and all of his dogs after a particularly brutal combat, and was very unhappy... but she got over it after a while, after I assigned her a few new dogs.

make sure you have burial options for pets, too, as dwarves don't like their pets to decay.

Yeah, my dining room was legendary, the walls were masterfully engraved, hallways lined with adamantine statues, all sorts of stuff. One of my traps used an adamantine artifact mechanism, even. Probably didn't look so nice when it was covered in the blood and guts of dozens of goblins, but still.

Only one who was still ecstatic was my champion, who enjoys killing and hated everyone else, so that he was happy when they died.

Thanks for the [nothought] tip. That'll help. I think I'm just going to make my defences better in my next fort, so goblins don't sneak in a back entrance that I forgot to close off...

I have a statue garden on the other side of a waterfall.  Dwarves seem to pretty much wake up, eat, then go visit the statue to get two good thoughts at once.  Haven't had a tantrum yet.

The thing you might try is keeping the military separate from the rest of the fortress, and have them undergo some heavy indoctrination (butcher duty - after they saw enough deaths and killed enough kittens they'll get the "He doesn't really care about anything anymore" description tag and will become resilient to losing friends). This should help as the peasants don't know the grunts, and the grunts don't care.

I won't implement it though, in my fortresses the military should be best chaps with and heroes for the common folks, since they're the dudes who go face-to-face with the goblins when the s*** hits the fan, not Udim Woodworker who will watch the carnage from behind three sealed gratings and moats.

That's very strange, as I've never had a tantrum spiral.  In fact, in my most recent fort, a goblin siege killed 42 of my 124 dwarfs.  The aftermath was only that a couple of the little guys requested meetings with the mayor.  Maybe I keep them too busy to make friends?

Aye, the only spirals I have had was in the military after particularly bloody battles. Having only 2 survivors of a squad of 10 who were all friends/lovers is particularly hard on the chaps. Usually I end up training a whole new batch of military. However, by creating no statue gardens, and keeping idle to 0 at all times (smoothing, pump operating, crafts, bins, barrels, blocks, and stone/item hauling). Keeps friends to a minimum, and spirals to minimum as well.

I found out you're not supposed to edit the raws without making a new world, so that wouldn't work out. Also, it'd be [NOEMOTION] instead of [NOTHOUGHT].

Whatever. For some reason, I'm not getting the spiral in my new fort, even after a similar loss of dwarves that killed my old fortress. Only my military dwarves are going insane. Reclaiming is still nuts, though.
