Cross Platform play is in the game but cross platform parties (i.e. you playing on Mac with your friend playing on PS4) is in development some way between years and never.

That being said I'm not sure how good steam play is for multiplayer, if your friends play on PC with steam then it might be fine with you on a Mac but if they are on PlayStation or Xbox then getting it on a Mac (if it ever comes out on it) is probably a bad choice.
