Very slow in OS X?
« on: April 04, 2008, 03:49:00 am »

I'm running DF on my iMac and it's SUPER SLOW!! My friend verified that his older iMac is running nice and zippy. What gives? Has anyone experimented with performance on Macs?

Here are my system specs:
 Model Name:   iMac
 Model Identifier:   iMac5,1
Processor Name:   Intel Core 2 Duo
 Processor Speed:   2.16 GHz
 Number Of Processors:   1
 Total Number Of Cores:   2
 L2 Cache:   4 MB
 Memory:   1 GB
 Bus Speed:   667 MHz

I'm on an iMac with similar stats; I have 1GB more RAM but otherwise they're basically the same. For me things start out nice and zippy, but they noticeably bog down as I get more dwarves, until right around the 80 point I lose interest in the fortress because things happen so slowly.

The hints described in this article should help, though I haven't tried them myself.

I've tried nearly all the stuff at the Wiki. Tonight I'll try turning off Temperature.

Last night I deleted and reinstalled the game, just in case it was some of my customization. With default world creation & settings, it's noticeably slow with the initial seven dwarves.

Before the reinstall, it was slow with weather off, sound off, graphic refresh capped to 15, priority high. And this was embarking with seven dwarves in a 2x2 area in a pocket region!

At my friends Mac (Which too is running slowly) the G_FPS_CAP doesn't seem to do much. We turned it down to 15 and the flightpaths of projectiles still seemed to be exactly the same as in 50.

Someone should experiment with G_FPS_CAP on Mac more thoroughly. Because if the cap doesn't work, it would explain a lot about Macs working slowly.

The G_FPS/FPS decoupling hasn't happened on the Mac yet.
