What I love about Kaiserreich is that it doesn't have much railroading.
There's still a lot of railroading in Kaiserreich, but unlike vanilla it's more of a rail-network that makes HOI go where you want it to go, then a single road that always follows the same script. I still think they could've used DH decision system more.

I was insanely into Darkest Hour (the standalone) and couldn't really get into HOI2 after that. It had more provinces, and since I'm really into the Pacific Theatre, the changes in carrier warfare were significant to me.

One thing that did happen to me was that I was permanently out of Rare Materials until I conquered Manchukuo. It's sort of unclear what kinds of production need what, but I felt that was also holding me back. I was permanently researching the rare materials tech, but I don't know what else to do about it except stop building things? There's really only so much you can do with 70 IC, most of which is going into supplies for your overextended lines anyway.

Any suggestions other than nationalist China? I'm tempted by Japan, but don't like the idea of the inevitability of losing to the US because over 9000 IC. I'd definitely like something with a heavy navy emphasis, but most other nations I can think about need to work lots of different theatres at the same time, which I'd like to avoid.

Yeah as China if you don't mind being a bit gamey you have to know to trade like hell for stuff before the war, and even then it will only last so long unless you can somehow keep some trades going with neighbors.

France actually starts with a fairly beefy navy, and you can abuse it 'cause it's not crucial for the main event.  The downside is until you have (hopefully) fended off the Germans you can't really invest much in expanding it.  Oh, it does start with overseas colonies, but I usually just stripped them of most of their troops to use in France itself.

Italy is the obvious choice, but a bit tricky to balance everything out.  Nicely focused in the Med, decent sized economy but not the HUGE chore that Germany/UK/USA can be.  But you also don't have the slack they do - you have to pick your goals and focus on them and not waste resources on side projects.   LOTS of choices for where and how to fight.  And a lot of fun to play, even if sometimes I got my ass kicked by UK :D

Canada or even Australia can build up a decentish navy, I haven't actually played them much myself, some of the AARs looked like they did OK though.

Kaiserreich for Darkest Hour uses HOI2 style decision system because it was originally designed for vanilla HOI2. DH's version of Kaiserreich is simply a port of the vanilla modification adapted to work with DH's map and game mechanics.

The problem with the rare materials is that most of the available ones in the vicinity is to the south of China, you'll probably have resource problems after a while  as Japan until you attack the allies unless you manage to keep the trade flowing. Also, the tech only increase your production by percentage, so if it's really low it probably won't help much. Mods sometimes make it possible to expand base resource-production too. Black ICE for instance, although it adds a lot of other things as well which makes it a bit more confusing.

If you want to play with a navy Japan is not a bad choice at all, The ai isn't all that good at stomping all over you even if it has the upper hand. And playing the other side would probably end up kind of easy. Especially if axis mess up before you get involved if you decide to play the USA for instance. Compared to playing Italy or Germany you won't have to focus as much on land (unless you backstab Soviet). And unlike UK, France and Soviet your enemies have a bigger fleet so you probably won't be able to just roll over them when the war starts.

One irritating thing about island countries like Japan and UK is that you will have to deploy all new units there and then transport them to where you want them.

Once again, this thread arises from the grave.

I played a bit of HoI4, was immediately disappointed, and decided to finally go back and do HoI3 for real. Post-binge results:

It's almost 1939, so soon the allies will be fed up with Germany's gross disregard for the national sovereignty of their neighbors, leaving poor countries like Bulgaria to suffer the consequences. What I'm wondering is if I could attack Poland or France first, use the puppet wargoal (and maybe add an region annexation as well if it stalls long enough), and still have it execute while my good friend Germany does most of the heavy lifting. If I were to get Poland as a puppet (and maybe annex the western half), would they be useful against the Soviets later?

Also, the US has already joined the allies, out of some unfounded fear of my just and peaceful unification of the Balkans. Should I be worried?

I just followed the link to the lets play with buddys from 2004, awefully hopeful.

Anyway, I also booted my old copy up, since I am still uncertain about HoI 4.

Currently playing as russia, just ramping up factorys all the way till 1940, now pumping out mixed divisions and medium armor - and I rapidly ran out of manpower like right away. Germany ate all of norway, sweden and finland, but left france completly alone - a little strange, but whatever. Raising french and German Thread since 1936 should not have that effect or? I can't war-dec anyone yet, sadly - unless I winter-war the German Puppet Norway.

I too am considering a new HOI III play through. Not sure where to start though, I always hate playing majors for whatever reason, probably because almost all of them are in precarious tedious perches of one kind or another. Considering playing Persia/Iran and taking over the world's Oil. Or Sweden, and go all stormaktstiden. Or, one of the ever-fun Balkan nations.

What do you guys think?

The balkans have been very fun. Every war has been against a numerically superior foe, often with a border too long to fully cover with divisions, necessitating some interesting tactics (and ample abuse of victory points and the enemy's unmobilized reserves). Taking Hungary for instance, there was no way I could possibly match them in a slugfest, so I pushed my entire tiny army to Budapest while they spilled over my borders like ants (and almost immediately cut off my supply). Taking Italy was a hell of a campaign, I think I was actually a couple weeks from surrendering when I nailed them down, since I left my core completely unguarded and got naval invaded.

The leadership is extremely tight though, you really can't waste a single tech. I like it though, it really forced me to look up what every modifier really does to decide what was essential.
