Removing fortifications

Is there any way to replace fortifications with engravings?  33e allows you to carve fortifications even when there is no open space on the other side... a typo gave my inner sanctum a ring of fortifications instead of engravings...

Maybe you could deconstruct them / mine them and engrave the walls beyond them?
I would say you are in a better position to test this, though.  ;)

Well yes.  I could do that, but it is dug out "just so" and I would hate to tamper with the room's shape and dimensions.  I would destroy/rebuild, but I don't think you can carve fortifications on rebuilt walls.

Imagine if you'd done it the other way, and you now had a bunch of masterwork engravings where you intended fortifications...
