As soon as i started my new fortress in a terryfying region, i was greeted by a group of 4 skeletal groundhogs at the start. I pause, start digging and recruit some militia to fend them off, me bringing a group of killer cows(copyrighted by jaqie) the battle was already won before it started, but before my dwarves resumed their tasks i was already under attack from a second group past the river, which killed a dog and a cat before they were detected by my main force. When the fighting was nearly over i noticed all my dwarves were freaked out again, this time by enemy reinforcements from the south...

Long story short, i have been under relentless assault by skeletal groundhogs for more then a year now, with 5 dwarves permanently needed to fight off the neverending stream of undead rodents that keep charging into my fortress.

So far there were 3 breaks in the fighting, none of them lasted more then 15 seconds...

this is the point where you place floodgates across the entrance to the fortress, leaving 1 dwarf outside as the valiant rearguard...

It's not that they appear in any ammount dangerous to something bigger then a dog, but they just spawn 3-4 every few seconds...

My metalsmith and her peasant husband made it though it with only 2 bruises and the caravans can pulverize any rodents stupid enough to attack them.

If only there was a way to make my dwarves pick up the bones without being scared away. <Sigh>

Assign guards around the bones and have them follow the stupid scared dwarves... I wonder if the like fighting flag might do it?

That is EXACTLY what happened to me on my latest hermit game. I found that wrestlers were effective against the groundhogs..However the dwarf I chose to be the hermit lost her head and started running in all directions..

Yup, [RECKLESS] worked perfectly.

I guess the groundhogs are unhappy about me turning their fallen brethren into earrings, this time they send 2 groups of 4 skeletal wolves directly after eachother in addition to the normal stream.
