Max age difference is 10 years (rather short, given how long dwarves live, especially since they're fertile all the way). It's been noted DF doesn't uphold that restriction for migrants already married on arrival.

Scholars gain attributes from their studies.  Animals gain attributes from fighting.  And of course soldiers gain attributes from fighting and sparring.  If you have a good trainable animal it might be worth working in some selective breeding and combat experience.

Edit: A temple in the burrow is a terrible idea. The buggers spent half a year praying, with (almost) no socializing. Removing the temple got them socializing and into the lover state in a few months. Just before that I cut the tavern size to 2*2 (from 5*5) to get them into proximity. A few months more and they're still in the lover state. Note that it's a sample size of 1, so it's definitely no proof.

Lots of little 'roadside shrines' works well for me in that respect. If you restrict the space and instead build lots of non-specific praying areas across your fort (usually on larger tunnel routes or outside important industrial/residential areas), then divide the dedicated ones to be more flashy and about value/dwarf art appeal then they'll bond quickly. Just dont mix in animals into those areas, pet waterbuffalos and such could make a bloodbath  :)

Sometimes it takes dwarves literally clambering on top of each other to pray, to get them to notice each other even when they don't want to. A holy tower of grumpy beards attached to grumpy faces.
