A good time to remind 4x loving folks, that Distant Worlds is available on steam and matrixgames. It's pricey, but often goes on -50% sale. Despite being a real-time game (with pause), it pulls off a lot of things just right.

Third game already derped by crossing the snake with hedgehog.
Someone taking a name to make RTS and pour fluo-snot on it now just... figures, really.

It's about as RTS as Sword of the Stars, and honestly we could use more 4X games being like Sword of the Stars.

That said, as a person who didn't really play the first two games in the series enough to really like them, I can't say I find anything wrong with the reboot as it stands. The art direction is great, the game mechanics seem close to what I vaguely remember of MoO2. It's pretty neat, if limited at the moment. Besides the realtime tactical combat (which I remember not being in MoO2) and starlanes (which I don't remember not being in MoO2, but apparently they weren't), there doesn't seem to have been much deviation from the source material. I vehemently agree with realtime combat being superior to turnbased (if for no other reason than visuals, everything else is decided by numbers anyway), and starlanes don't bother me nearly as much as they seem to bother players of the old MoO (see: Sword of the Stars, also Remember Tomorrow (aka Polaris Sector nowadays)). The end result is a fairly entertaining game.

Is there any video showcasing how space tactical combat or orbital assault or planetary invasion / bombardment happen ?

For orbital assault/invasions all that happens is you have an option to Bombard or Drop all your bombs. When you bombard you will see the numbers on the right side of the screen go down on either Marines, Population or Buildings. Once you are satisfied that you've bombed enough marines you can invade with your own marines. There is no special screen for this - it is just represented by numbers on screen.

So they did it exactly the same as in MoO1/MoO2 ?

Is there some kind of animation like in the past games (that had a simple animations for the bombardment) or is that only numbers as you seems to say ?

I haven't seen ground combat, but if it's like bombardment then it looks exactly like auto-resolved tactical battles. There's a column list of your forces on the left of the screen, a column list of enemy forces on the right, and they take turns suffering casualties until one side has nothing left.

Yeah it's pretty much exactly how Sean describes it. Here's a screenshot if that helps.

I see thanks, out of the lack of simple animation, it's indeed very similar indeed to the old games.

found one with orbital assault :

looks like the planet isn't part of such battle, it seems to just be a background model/picture

Being used to MoO1/MoO2 turn based battles, i didn't expected it to be real time in that remake, i assume fleet vs fleet are real time too ?

quill18 has a let's play series of the game going on youtube (4 hours of gameplay atm), it's a pre-release build though, but still likely among the most informative sources at the moment considering he is well versed in MOO2 and has high-ish production values.
