Vaulted ceiling value
« on: February 17, 2016, 06:37:51 pm »

Multi-level Z rooms are time consuming and often difficult to make depending on the function of the room.

What do you guys think about adding value per-tile to a designated room (bedroom, for instance) if it has open space above it? As it is now, it has to have a roof up there at some point, or it won't let you place many types of furniture or designate many types of rooms.

Thoughts?

Caverns have their own challenges to construction. I think the idea of building in a dangerous location (fending off GCS, Ogres, FB's etc) would offset the relative ease of getting the extra bonus of a vaulted ceiling.

Mind you I don't think value should be added for each open space tile above the floor. Just the one above. Or at least, there would have to be some limit on value gained from spaces above a tile.

I think it would suffice just to allow the walls' value be included in the room value (smoothed, engraved, etc.) and maybe a value of 1 per tile of open space (subject to the usual penalties for overlapping rooms). Ceilings might be tough since they are really the floor above, and there's no reason why smoothing/engraving the floor up there should improve the underside.

Yeah, I agree with that. The material of the actual roof should not be called into effect, that would be like getting double value for one tile, and would also cause havoc with overlapping. Just the open space above.

Maybe there could be tiers? There could be a bonus for one tile above, and then maybe a bonus for 5 tiles above? It would have to apply only to indoor tiles.

Why? having an open courtyard could be seen as as much a statement about the owner's power as a golden floor would their wealth. "Why yes I did have a hundred-thousand tons of rock quarried out of the ceiling solely for my viewing pleasure. What are you gonna do about it?" -- Urist McNoble

Hmmm yeah that makes sense, in fact that's exactly my thinking as far as why it should be a feature. But how would we prevent the game from adding massive value to outdoor buildings? There's just sky up there, after all.

Well actually, if there was a limit to the number of tiles above a floor that count towards a bonus, it wouldn't really matter now would it.

This has been dunamisdeos' self-answering questions moment.
