Haben Sie "Dwarf Fortress" auf Deutsch? (German Translation?)
« on: November 17, 2012, 08:11:20 pm »

I've been studying German for just over six months now. I enjoy learning, but Dwarf Fortress keeps pulling me away from my studies. So I figured, why can't I do both at the same time? So what do you think? Has DF ever been translated into other languages, or is it exclusive to the English-speaking world?

Please note: I realize that DF's text engine probably won't allow for massive changes in sentence composition, but since German and English are kind of structurally similar, it might be possible to make a rough translation.

I believe the majority of the screens can be translated if you break out some more intrusive type software to get access to it, but other then that the only things that you can actually change are the names of creatures, reactions, plants, and items.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

The biggest problem is probably the lack of genus specific articles in english and the resulting absence of such a variable/tag in the code.

Which ones? If you mean the embark ones etc., those are a bit easier to change than others, because they're held in files that takes a program to encrypt/decrypt.

It looks like the German DF forum worked on a translation, but it hasn't been updated for a while. The latest version is apparently this one, but it's for 0.31.25. It shouldn't be too hard to make it work for the newer versions. I don't know how much they were able to change, I haven't tried it yet.

Another thing that I found is German language files. If you were to replace the dwarven language with that, you could practice German vocabulary by reading dwarf names.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Thank you Trif! That is quite helpful. I think I'll look through those options and see what I can come up with.

Earth is female in German: "die Erde".
Being conscious of this, "Strike the earth!" conjures up some nice and dwarvish images.  :D
