Drop the axe!

Is there any way to make a woodcutter drop the axe he's hauling arround other then hurting him? He picked up an artifact that was intended to be used by my legandary axedwarf instead of the copper ones the civilians are supposed to use.

Disable his Woodcutting labor and change his soldiering preferences to something other than Axe. If he still won't drop it, try activating him as a soldier.

Is there any way to get him to take it back up after making him drop it?

I'm quite saddened that the creator of my artifact spear will never be able to use in combat, apparently.

Switch him from woodcutting to mining, and he'll drop it pretty quickly.

I can't get dwarves to pick up dropped artifacts, whether they are the creator or not.

Make a tiny axe-specific stockpile nearby?
