Does Dual Wielding Work?
« on: January 21, 2017, 10:33:03 pm »

I've been trying to get the best combinations of dual wielding in adventure mode, so I can have dwarves follow suit in fortress mode and the world can cower before my hamaxelord's and such. Hopefully eventually they'd be riding on trained giant lions, when mounts are introduced, or some other large angry cat.

But back to my current question: If I assign a dwarf an axe one time, then a hammer the next, and he trains them both equally for a bit, if I take away his shield and replace it with the missing axe or hammer, will he use them both equally? Or just whichever he has more skill in, which he has in his dominant hand, which comes first in the menu? I'd love if it was simply he alternated between the two or used whichever he wanted to at the moment, but I doubt this is so. So, is it so?

From the !!science!! I read so far, it seems that dwarves will prefer [edged] attacks over [blunt] ones. That was probably implemented to assure that dwarfs don't always end their enemies rightly with their sword pommel and actually stab them with the pointy end. So your hamaxelords would probably be axelords with the occasional "bashing the scull through the brain and tearing the brain". But if I recall correctly, it would be a lot more equally used if you would use axes and morningstars, since morningstars have a very shallow and therefore mostly converted to blunt [edged] attack.

In fortress mode dual wielding doesn't really work. You are FAR better off just giving them one weapon that they preferably have skill in plus a shield. In fortress mode choice weapons include battle axes, picks, and hammers. If you can get a hold of them, trade out hammers for morning stars. If you live somewhere infested with large fleshy threats with vulnerable organs consider spears as well. Edged weapons become much less effective when made of low quality metal and by unskilled hands with the notable exception of the above mentioned morning stars.

To elaborate on above: A dwarf, given two weapons, may use both of them, alternate between them or perhaps even multiattack(hard to test this one).

A special case is for crossbow and edged weapon - equipped in right order, they can shoot bolts as they approach the target to slow them down and then finish with what they have in other hand.

So yes, you can get an advantage with two weapons over one. But...

A shield, however, starts off at blocking 50% off blows and goes to 95%+ as skill is gained, even if still matching opponent (iirc).
