Werehumans
« on: January 31, 2016, 08:18:19 pm »

This may have been suggested before, but now with the introduction of so many antro races, it's only logical. Humans are a primal fear for a great number of animals. Civilized antros with enough exposure to humans would still be terrified to see a hulking, blood-thirsty human in a single-minded rage.

There could also be a cultural component among civilized antro races. Among more insulated races there may be some distrust toward other civs that members of their own who integrate with them would share to a degree. How horrifying would it be to them to see one of their own kind literally turn into the most monstrous example of humanity and turn against them?

Is it wrong that I don't understand what the suggestion here is?

Yes. If I provided no elaboration beyond the title of this post, that would be the suggestion.

I dunno, it made perfect sense to me. Have lycanthropic animal men turn into humans every full moon.

You'd have to finangle it a bit if it spreads to normal humans, of course. Either make humans immune to werehumanism, or call it "going berserk" or something. Or not. "The human farmer has become a human!" sounds exactly like the sort of silliness that Dwarf Fortress occasionally provides. :P

Quietust, what would we ever do without you and your endless knowledge of v0.23a?
I was going to say "fail spectacularly", but you guys seem to be doing a great job of that already.

There shouldn't be any chance for a human to contract it, and by the same token a wolf man wouldn't be cursed with a werewolf form; it wouldn't be logical or consistent with the myth of the werewolf. What I'm suggesting is that a monster human form would have analogous symbolism to an animal race.

I was about to reply that Humans aren't particularly menacing, in the nude, but then I remembered that this is the game with werechinchillae.

So yeah, I heartily approve of this idea, might even filch it for meself (if it's all the same to you.)

EDIT: Surely there should be other werehumanoids as well? Imagine the terror of a Dwarven fort when confronted with a wereelf.  :o

It's not that absurd. Animals do fear humans, even predators who encounter humans behave as though they're trying to intimidate them away rather than fight with them. Most people don't understand their language, so they believe they're already under attack and either stand stock still, staring at the creature, which will be taken as a challenge, or turn their backs and run just like prey, making themselves irresistible to predator instincts.

And do you think an animal with higher order analytical/critical faculties would be immune to anxieties over humanity?

Wereelf would be absurd. What elf could inspire terror in a dwarf? And they have too much affinity with animals for any mythology to have sprung up from tension between them.

If you mean normal humans, it would work like this.

If you mean big hulking human consistent with the other weres, then it's more an issue of making the game aware that Wolf Man is related to Wolf, etc. and then proceed from there.
